I do so love a real fire. Like you said, there is something very comforting about the warmth and crackling sound.

When I was a kid my Dad would open up the door on the stove and let us roast hot dogs. Mom would spread out a blanket in the living room and bring out a picnic basket so that we could have a cookout in the middle of winter.
That seems weird now, but I loved it.

I don't think it seems weird at all. Creative and loving parents making a fun experience, building memories. It worked too, because you loved it. I think it was a great idea.
