Sighişoara, part one

in #life6 years ago

Sighișoara (Romanian pronunciation: [siɡiˈʃo̯ara]; German Schäßburg; Magyar Segesvár; Lat. Castrum Sex) is one of the seven famous cities of The Transylvanian Saxons in Romania (it was built by the Germans who came there at the invitation of the Hungarian King, sometime in 1191). It is located in the central part of the country, in the historic province of Transylvania, in the district of Mureş. Today's modern town is located in the valley of the river Târnava Mare, beneath the walls of the old town.

The Old Town of Sighișoara is one of the most preserved medieval city cores in Europe and it is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. That is, as well as the fact that, by the arrival of historical circumstances, there was born Vlad Cepeș (which was an inspiration for Bram Stoker to make a character of count Dracula), which entrepreneurial Romanians converted into tourist brand number 1, is the reason why this town is on the main touristic map of Romania . The peak of the season here is the last weekend in July, when a traditional medieval festival (Festivalul Sighişoara medievală) is held.

In the old town, besides the completely preserved towers, the central square and colorful houses, are covered wooden stairs that delight visitors with their beauty.

Visiting the house where Vlad Third Cepeș (the Impaler) was born (because at that moment his father, Vlach duke Vlad II lived in exile), are charged the symbolic five lei (a bit over the one euro, so if you want to see that ...)

Since we arrived very early, after visiting the city and photographing, we strengthened with two Lángos and coca cola, and chatted with local souvenir sellers, in anticipation of the central event, the so-called cultural and artistic program.

This is all for the first part, later you will see how the central event of that day, the Knights tournament, passed.
