Great Crested Grebe:
Today I am going to write about the beautiful bird named Great Crested Grebe.
Scientific name:
The scientific name of this bird is Podiceps cristatus.Species:
They belong to the species P. cristatus.Resident:
They are present all over the UK.Vocal sound:
They bark like ‘rah-rah-rah’ and a clicking ‘kek’ mostly in the season of spring.Length of Great crested grebe:
It ranges from 46-51 cm.Wingspan:
t varies in between 85-89 cm.Habitat of crested grebe:
They breeds on Lakes.Gravel pits.
Slow flowing rivers.
But occasionally in the sea as well.
Behaviour:
There features are interesting to see.
They have a display features of head like head-shaking, penguin dances with bills full of water plants and noisy outbursts.
This elegant bird has a slender neck.
When you see from the distance they look black and white
Breeding season:
Sexes similar. In breeding time, they have pink bill, white face, black cap and large, showy, orange-chestnut and brown ear tufts.
Their nape and back are brown but underparts are brown.
Interestingly, in winters they lose their ear tufts and upperparts are brownish while underparts are white in colour. The black-cap appears above the eye level and make a contrast with white face. Bill is pinkish.
Interesting features:
In flight the adult shows white wedges on leading and trailing edges of inner wing in all plumages.
They look amazing when dance
They have a similar stripe like Zebra which is interesting to see.
Young grebe is different from their parents.
