राजपुताना (वर्तमान राजस्थान ) में अनेको ऐसे उदाहरण इतिहास में मिलते हैं, जहां की वीरांगनाओ ने जब अपने सतीत्व को खतरे में पाया, तब खुद को अग्नि में स्वाहा कर के अपने सतीत्व की रक्षा की।
मेरी पिछली पोस्टो में आपने पढ़ा भी हैं, कि गढ़ सिवाना और गढ़ स्वर्णगिरि जालौर जब वहां के राजपूत शासक मुगलो से हारने लगे, तब महलों में वीरांगनाओ ने अग्नि में जीवित जलकर अपने सतीत्व को बचाया।
विरोचित भाव से अग्नि में जीवित जलकर सतीत्व की रक्षा करने को ही यहां शाका अथवा जौहर कहा गया हैं।
गढ़ चित्तोड़ की महारानी पद्मिनी ने व उनके साथ गढ़ चित्तोड़ के परकोटे के भीतर रहने वाली हजारों वीरांगनाओ ने अपने सतीत्व को जौहर द्वारा मुगलो से बचाया। मुगल शासक अलाउद्दीन खिलजी ने रानी पद्मिनी के सौंदर्य पर मोहित होकर चित्तोड़ पर आक्रमण किया। अनेको प्रयासों और कई वर्षों तक वो चित्तोड़ पर राजपूत वीरो से नही जीत पाया तब छल कपट से उसने घात करके महाराणा राव रतन सिंह को हराया और अपने असली मकसद से किले में घुसा, उसने सोचा, तुर्कणीयों की तरह ही राजपूत क्षत्राणी पद्मिनी अब उसकी हो जाएगी, पर उस मदहोश शासक को निराशा ही हाथ लगी, क्योकि किले की सभी वीरांगनाओ ने जौहर कर के अपनी इहलीला समाप्त कर ली थी। उसके हाथ लगी क्षत्राणी पद्मिनी की राख।
विश्व में इस प्रकार के उदाहरण सिर्फ राजपुताना में ही मिल सकते हैं, क्योकि सतीत्व का महत्व सिर्फ और सिर्फ वीरो का गहना हैं, जो कायरो के वहाँ सम्भव नही हो सकता।
