Throughout 2016, researchers at Harvard University's School of Public Health, T. H Chan, analyzed thousands of numerical figures, plotted and scanned questionnaires to screen 70,000 nurses between the ages of 30 and 55. Their data had been collected in a public health survey that followed in their footsteps for four decades: professional women who were surveyed every two years about their habits and health status within the framework of the Nurses' Health Study.

By the end of 2016, Kim, a Ph.D. in Psychology and recognized by Forbes as one of the 30 young top health innovators last year and by Pacific Standard magazine as one of the 30 Young Thinkers of 2015, and Hagan, Ph.D. in the Harvard Epidemiology and a Master's in Public Health from Columbia University, focused on assessing the optimism of the women participating in the study.

Self-confidence benefits several areas of personal life; scientific say that with scientific tools which have been widely validated and basically turns a series of simple questions into a scale have provided surprising results.

A look at respondents' answers over a period of eight years - from 2004, when a question about optimism was included - showed irrefutable figures: women who showed a greater range of optimism in their personality had, according to this predictive scale, a 30 percent less chance of death during the study period. In detail, the more optimistic women were 16 percent less likely to die of cancer; 38 percent less die from heart attack and 39 percent less from stroke.

When researchers evaluated the possible causes for this association, they thought about aspects related to a healthy life, such as exercise and a better diet. All believed that these reasons, were going to explain clearly the association between optimism and less predicted death. But it was not like that. One possible cause that intrigues all is that optimism can have a direct impact on our biological systems: less inflammation, healthier lipid levels and more antioxidants.

The importance of this research was established by the American Journal of Epidemiology: its main driver, a doctor of psychology, stresses that, although previous studies had already determined that optimists die less because of heart problems - here comes the stress, linked to figures of heart attacks and whose ravages are less felt by those who have a more positive view of life. Research is the first to prove a statistical connection between optimism and lower risk of death from causes other than cardiovascular diseases. Among them: cancer, cerebrovascular events, respiratory and Infections.

All these investigations would not make more sense were it not for their potential impact on public policies aimed at improving health figures. A package of experimental studies over the past 15 years has shown that optimism is an attractive physiological quality for science. And that can be made to grow. A scientific work with twins showed that only 25 percent of human optimism is inherited, the rest is determined by personal effort and the environment.

Men and women can grow this personality trait with simple exercises, such as thanking in writing the benefits of the day and thinking that every problem has a solution. It is also useful behavioral therapy.

I work my way into applying this saying in every sentence I am constructing .... hard work but obtainable.

Most medical and public health efforts are focused on disease prevention. Studies like the above show that enhancing psychological resilience is vital because it can make a difference. The optimists are doing much better, not only suffering less stress, but their medical results were qualitatively superior.

Optimism is a positive, trainable emotion. It is possible to educate and teach people to have a more positive vision of the future and to provide more transient, specific and impersonal explanations for adverse events. Positive psychotherapy helps develop these skills, which are key to depression and anxiety disorders.

Studies have been done with cancer patients and cardiovascular disease and the most optimistic people would have behaviors that would benefit them in the face of their illness. The optimists were doing much better, not only were they less stressed, but their medical results were qualitatively superior.

Where is the key? Benefits come from optimists who cultivate their adaptive strategies better. They work to solve their problems because they believe a solution exists. They strive and are never in denial: they accept reality better.

Never ever denial ... a solution, another route, alternatives , always exist for every situation in our lives.

In 2006, the task of studying the relationship between optimism and quality of life in 190 patients with head and neck cancer and thyroid cancer started. Again, a better quality of life in optimistic patients was identified. But, when studying the results separately, this trend was only marked in patients with thyroid cancer. One possible explanation is that this disease has a much better prognosis. Optimism helps mental health, but not necessarily physical health. Another study from 2010, showed a six-month survival in optimistic patients with lung cancer over the pessimists.

The optimistic style globalizes the positive. This allows not only to keep hope alive, to feel that change is possible, to stand up, to deploy efforts and to resist adversity, but also to be nourished by positive events in it fullest possible way !!
