Johari's Window Model is a model which helps you understand your relationships with others and yourself. It can also be used to assess realtionship between any group of people; for example family, team, organization, couple, friends etc.

The Johari Window Model was introduced by American psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955, while researching group dynamics at the University of California Los Angeles.

Johari's Window Model

The name Johari came from Joseph and Harry. If you look at the image above, you'll see a window and its panes. Johari's model is called Window model because it resembles a square window with four panes.

The four panes of Johari's window represent four areas (also called quadrants, regions, spots, etc.) of personality. These areas are called Open, Blind, Hidden, and Unknown respectively. The image above is the standard representation of Johari's Window Model.

There are two main parties who can observe Johari's areas of personality. Let's discuss them briefly.

Self

'Self' in the pictures means the person whose personality is being considered. In your case, it will be you. There are two areas of your personality which are known to you (open, hidden), while the other two are unknown (blind, unknown).

Others

'Others' means all the people around you. Your personality is exposed to them. They know two areas of your personality (open, blind), while the other two are unknown to them (hidden, unknown).

Others can be your family members, friends, colleagues, life partner, social circle, or any people you have interaction with. Interaction makes your personality known to others.
