It's 1981, and Chris Gardener (Will Smith) is trying to make a living selling bone scan equipment in San Francisco to doctors and medical centers. Clunky cars are a pain in the ass, but he likes to bond with people. Despite being a born salesman, this African American thinks he has a better career. His wife, Linda (Thandie Newton), has two jobs helping pay the bills, and they don't pay rent. Her five-year-old son Christopher (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith) is attending daycare, and his father is upset that the word "pursuit of happiness" is outside the building. He is convinced that these little details play a role in life.

The constant financial pressure is too great for Linda, so she decides to get a job with a relative in a New York restaurant. Although her husband disappointed her, she is convinced that she will find a way to care for her son, so she leaves Christopher with him.

Chris's persistence pays off when he is selected for an internship at a prestigious brokerage firm. The deciding factor seems to be that he hits one of the best officials by solving the Rubik's Cube in record time. Obviously, in addition to his talent for selling him, he has a unique talent for numbers. The single downside to his new life is that the program does not pay salaries and that only one in 20 interns will eventually be hired. Meanwhile, his financial situation becomes more fragile when some of his bone scans are stolen, and he and his son are removed from his apartment. They move into a small motel room, but then they have to go down to the street. Father and son sleep in the bathroom at the bus station. Luckily, they can turn this harrowing experience into a game by pretending to be dinosaurs hiding in a cave.

Steve Konrad's (Weather Man) script offers a somewhat limited view of happiness, equating it with flashy cars, high-paying jobs, and luxurious homes. The gardener believes in capitalism and plays the competitive game well. We have no choice but to cheer him up as he overcomes one hurdle and one setback after another. Of course, your son's trust and love keep it going, but the movie wants us to believe that everyone can make lots of money by proving themselves. This may have been the case 60 years ago, but it is no longer the case today, as the gap between rich and poor has become a gap. The pursuit of happiness is fueled by the energetic action of Will Smith, and intimacy with young Chris becomes natural when he is played by his own real son.

"Inspiring" is not the word I usually choose to describe a great movie because it evokes overtones of something juicy or overly sentimental. However, I think this word best conveys Will Smith's vivid interpretation of father and worker Chris Gardner in real life.
