Why You Should Say I Love You to a Slug...

Just something a little different to all that valentine stuff out there today...

When your children tell you they are frightened of something, what do you do?

Tell them not to worry?

Tell them not to be silly?

Or show them another way of seeing things?

My girls started being difficult going to school on the little twittern that we go down because when it was wet, something that you can't avoid in Britain for long, the path became overrun with slugs.

And let's be honest they are not the most attractive of creatures. I can see why they could put you off your daily walk to school.

So after many attempts at rational conversation and trying to convince my kids that slugs were harmless and not going nibble their toes, or suck out their souls, I tried another route.

I made up a story about them...

I told the girls that slugs were fairies who were once really pretty, but an evil wizard didn't like pretty fairies and so he would turn them into the most ugliest thing he could concoct and that was a slimy, stodgy blob of sluginess.

He didn't like fairies, as they wouldn't look twice at him, but he was always hidden in a bunch of rainclouds and fairies don't like the rain, because it gets their wings wet.

Another reason why he chose to change them into slugs, as they only really start to come out when the ground is wet.

There was only one way to change the fairies back from slugs into their former glory and that was if someone said "I love you" to a slug.

Who would say I love you to a slug?

The wizard thought his idea was foolproof, but he didn't expect the fairies to whisper into children's ears as they slept of their friends' being trapped as slugs.

it was the Tooth Fairy mainly, as she went out most nights and the Wizard hadn't discovered her hiding place, or where all the teeth and childrens' memories were stored.

Of course, there were a lot of children who just didn't believe what they had been told, as the story does seem a little far fetched, but there were some children who listened.

Like Poppy. She had a kind heart. She recognised what the fairy was saying to be true and even though she never saw a slug transforming back into a fairy (it only happened in the dark when nobody was watching), she happily stopped every time she spotted a slug and squat down and told it that she loved it.

She swears she can hear the fairy within saying thank you.

But the best thing of all was that the kids now walk on the path and ‘save’ the slugs by telling them that they love them, rather than be scared off them.

One problem solved anyway!

hahhaha good way to get the gals to go to school and find a 'love' for something as nasty and slimy as a slug.. I know I would sure say I love you to a slug if I knew it would manifest back into a pretty, pretty princess lol nothing wrong with that!!

Slugs are lovely really. They inspired the story, can't be too bad.

hahaha yes depends upon how you look at them and imagine them, per your story they are simply wonderfully beautiful fairies, but the evil wizard thought otherwise lol keep up the good work @hopehuggs I enjoy your stuff

Yes @hopehuggs, the problem is solved. Innocent slugs could be saved if every kid reads your story. They get over fear and help slugs saying "I love you".

I liked this story to save slugs. It is really creative. Do you write stories for kids?

Yes I like to write stories for children, need to explore my notebooks and get some more out there on Steemit.

Great idea and happy to know that you write stories.

Love it... imagine what it would be like if adults continued a childlike attitude towards their surroundings... embracing perceptions the way it is being presented :)). Creativity for parenting :)

I do try to think sometimes, what would I feel like if this was the first time I saw it, or experienced, or try to enjoy it anyway even if its the 153rd time.

Well I am indeed fascinated by the story & I am sure they are on the same boat as well !You do have a nice skill of telling and making them comfortable though !
That is ,you are a great MOM !

Thank you. I try.

Great little story thanks for sharing! @journeyfreedom

I love this idea! I have to get creative and come up with some good tales so my boys won't be afraid of the dark!

Hmmm, I might take that and have a go one day soon, need to get more creative again. You leave great comments @keciah

Sometimes all children need is a little imagination to become less afraid of something. For us adults, it's "telling a white lie." haha.

imagination, little white lie - there is not a huge chasm between their meanings.

This is very humorous and definitely different than any of the other posts on here that I've read. Is this a true story?

it would be nice if it was true, but the girls do now say I love you to every slug they see.

this was you at your best loved it :D

Children are really important..its best to teach them how to stay away from trouble.

We can but do our best, as none of us knows what life will throw at us.
