Someone today sent me the link of this TED talk whose presenter is Steven Pinker, who is a Professor and cognitive psychologist at Harvard University.

Well a lot of people are hit by nostalgia and tend to think that Past was much better than the Present. However, Professor Steven Pinker proves in his talk that the world today is much better than it was 30 years ago. And he has numbers to prove it. So, let's see some of those numbers.

Homocide

30 years ago, the rate of homocide in USA was 8.5 per hundred thousand, while last year it was only 5.3 per hundred thousand.

Poverty

30 years ago, the poverty rate in the USA was 12%, while last year, it was just 7%. As far as the whole world is concerned, 30 years ago, 37% of the world population was living in extreme poverty, while last year, only 10% of the world population was living in extreme poverty.

Wars

30 years ago, there were 23 wars going on around the world, while last year, there were only 12 ongoing wars. Last year, there were 238 terrorism related deaths in Western Europe, but in 1988, there were 440!

Literacy

Before the 17th century, only 15% of Europeans could read or write. However in the middle of the 20th century, Europe and United states achieved universal literacy. Today, more than 90% of the world's population under the age of 25 can read and write.

Happiness

With everything else, happiness has increased too. In recent decades, happiness has increased in 86% of the world's countries.

I personally believe that happiness will increase and the world will get better with improvements in technology. With ground breaking technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Asteroid Mining, Vertical Farming, 3D printing of large structures and Nuclear Fusion etc, we could ultimately achieve Post-scarcity economy and/or Universal Basic Income, which would allow everyone to meet their basic needs at least.

I would also love to read your opinions on this.

No doubt technology hasalready transformed our world, for better and for worse. ModernTechnology has made the world richer overall and have made our life better..
VEry nice content @hmushtaq

Technology has revolutionized our lives indeed. Nowadays, you can get wifi in many places for free. Could someone imagine that even 10 years ago?

I have heard people say that poor people in the USA live better than Kings did 1,000 years ago.

That is because, the Kings 1000 year ago didn't have the technology that even the poor have in USA today.

Yeah things like AC and indoor plumbing are nice and our heating systems are better than a wood fire. It would have been pretty cool to be a king but it probably would have sucked pretty bad for about 99% of people.

Yes, but Kings' lives sometimes were also short lived. Have you ever heard the quote "When you live by the Sword you also die by the Sword".

Upvoted. I like your post. Good perspective. I like it. We can build on those things. It may not be the whole story, but we can focus on the good things. I love 3D Printing and Bitcoin and Steemit and Bit Torrent and Ubuntu and more. We have to keep fighting as elites try to kill all of us. Bill Gates Vaccines murders so many people in India. That is one special example of bad stuff happening. Facebook was designed to make people depressed and terrible things are happening in many countries in Europe each day and Europe WILL BE DEAD AND GONE FOREVER very soon in the next few years if we do nothing to stop it.

I can talk all day about bad stuff that is WORSE than before despite what you are talking about and we got to stay awake and wake up and red pill people each day because we live in an #InformationWar world. I am Oatmeal haha. Nice to know you. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your opinion @joeyarnoldvn. You are right about cryptocurrencies, as due to their decentralized nature, they are breaking the monopoly of centralized services, such as Facebook, Twitter and Google. Decentralization allows for shared economy, making more people self employed. And like you also said, Ubuntu and Open source software in general has been great, as it allows for people all around the world to contribute to useful software and also use it for free.

Life is getting better and better with time. But I believe people are losing their humanity with time.
