💓💓💓

"Hi Steemit on this beautiful day, afternoon or evening at this moment I will tell you my experience with the SOA and take some pictures that I wanted to show you with all the love of the world, I hope you like them !!"

  • We start! *

The SOA is the Society of Angostura Orchids, are a group of people who love this beautiful flower who has several presentations, are responsible for giving talks so that we learn to take care of planting and reproducing them so that the national symbol can be combined into a national feeling .

In the framework of the 2nd International Congress of Medical Students, the organizers made an invitation to this beautiful society where each partner brings a show of plants so that the community in general can enjoy it.

In my personal experience from very early in preschool the teachers took my group a lot to historical sites in our city, one of them and the one I liked the most was the Botanical Garden nowadays it is abandoned. But there the first flower we were taught was the orchid that was on the araguaney which is the national tree.

Venezuela has more than 1500 species of orchids. It is one of the countries with the largest number of known Cattleyas species. The orchid, a plant that officially represents the femininity and beauty of the country, together with the national tree and the national bird, forms the ornamental symbols of Venezuela.

What are its general characteristics?

Orchids usually have three sepals, two petals and one lip. The fruit is a capsule that contains in its interior many small seeds of the flower, which allows it to spread rapidly in a territory.

When it blossoms, it is striking that it rotates 180 degrees before opening to fully expose the lip to the pollinators.

Your scientific name?

Cattleya mossiae, in honor of William Cattley, who in 1818 cultivated the first bulbs of this plant in England, through some species sent from Brazil. The botanist John Lindley gave it this name.

How is it popularly known?

Flor de Mayo, because in the 19th century the town used it to decorate the "Cruz de Mayo".
This festival is celebrated on May 3 of each year, it is the welcome to spring in Venezuela

Where does it originate?

The Venezuelan orchid is native to the Cordillera de la Costa. Cattleya mossiae is classified as an epiphytic herb that grows on other plants. Currently it is available in other areas of the country. Its favorite habitat is Ávila, north of Caracas.
Sii the weather in avila is very warm for these plants because in 2013 I had the opportunity to go to this park and love if flora.

When was it declared a national flower?

On May 23, 1951 by presidential decree, the then president of the Governing Board Germán Suárez Flamerich, after an exhaustive investigation by the Venezuelan Society of Natural Sciences.

How was this flower chosen among so many others that exist in Venezuela?

After a process initiated by Augusto Mijares, who was Minister of Education for the time, with the help of Amenodoro Rangel, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, a commission was appointed for the selection of said flower, taking into account the following aspects:

To be of unique birth in the country.
Have a great duration.
Be the best known in the country.
Be recognized in most of the country of origin and also abroad.
After several days of searching, they came up with the name of several flowers that met the demands. Among them: Cattleya mossiae, Speciosissima and Percivaliana.
It was on May 23, 1951, when the Government decided to name the orchid as a national flower, based on the aforementioned aspects.

Why the orchid can be enjoyed in so many places?

The family of orchids turns out to be the most dominant and abundant of the Venezuelan flora. It has 1,506 species identified in the country, according to the most recent inventory carried out by the National Herbarium.

When does it bloom?

Between April and May. It offers a flower of 20 to 35 centimeters long, with a single leaf and with purple, lilac and pink petals.

My congress partner, from this adventure called medicine and now at steemit @doctorsubero, as a photographer.
