The Chaos Communication Congress is largely by volunteers. About 2500 of the 12,000 attendees sign up to become so-called "angels", and thus are put in charge with some duties, like bartendering, cleaning up halls, taking away empty bottles (which also new and regular visitors are encouraged to do), providing live translations and subtitles, setting up and keeping the technical infrastructure running, and more. The reward is the good feeling of contributing, seeing much more of the congress building like backstage areas, meeting many more like-minded folks, and more. They get no rebate, everybody pays the same about 100 EUR for 4 days. This is ridiculously cheap for such an event. Only the speakers in the main halls don't have to pay any entrance fee.

And it works! This is the anti-thesis to Ayn Rand-like ideologies. This is like a social-anarchistic society could look like.
