Yes, it's horrible. But we are also doing far worse to chickens, cows and whatnot... and not even for traditions. I don't approve the one or the other. We should be able to keep feeding ourselves withou having to make any living creature suffer. Maybe it's hypocritical. But i can't imagine a full-vegetarian world.
The fact of the matter is that people should not be suffering any kind of creature. If you can not do without meat, it must be humane! In addition, the dog has always been the most loyal friend and helper of man. In this case, look how exposed the terrible suffering of these beings. There are many other case is monstrous and unjustified violence on the part of the humans, such as the slaughter of baby seals - the pups or the annual mass killing of dolphins in Denmark.
