BUILD A MUD HOUSE: the definitive guide
We all know that the construction market is a mad house. Why not build your own MUD house then?
Sometimes, when you are bored at work, the Internet can take you to unexpected places. Even to a website flaunting the merits of the MUD HOUSE :)
[The Mud House of Atulya, complete with outdoor kitchen]
Atulya lives in Turkey. As she explains in her book, she went out of funds five years ago and had to live outdoor, camping. Instead of being the ordeal anyone could dread, it turned out for her to be so rewarding and inspiring that she decided to build her own house with only the barest element available around: EARTH.
Now, she lives in her mud house, complete with solar panels and electricity, has her own website and her own workshops when dozens of people from all around the world come to learn how to make the most of our environement without ruining it.
I highly recommend anyone of you to go to her website and download her (free) PDF book. It is full of recommendations and step-by-step guide about the making of a mud house.
Here are a photographic summary of the steps (6 weeks in total!):
The foundation.
The bags of earth are slowly rising up. The window and door frames are in place.
The roof is shaping up.
The finish product
And some decoration.
Some sit in mud and reach for the stars... Others live in star-studded mud houses!

Great job. It kinda reminds of the hobbit homes. And this in just 6 weeks. This makes more sense to me than working 30 or 40 years for a chicken box in a filthy city.
Exactly my thought! Of course, it requires to buy a land, and to have the determination to finish it. However, when you read her book, it is totally doable, and it is so rewarding in the end.
And we have building codes in the US.
And zoning.
Sorry charlie
That's not allowed.
