My First Backyard Ice Rink

in #life9 years ago (edited)

I decided to build a backyard ice rink for my kids this year. It's been quite the adventure so far. I built it out of 2x10's and decided on a size of 20 Feet by 40 Feet. I didn't go back any further because of the even bigger slope.

I purchased a liner from IronSleek. https://canada.ironsleek.com/ice-rink-liner/24x50liner.

I waited for really cold weather on the horizon and then put the tarp in the night before. I tucked in all the corners and filled with water and tried for a minimum of 4 inches. Because of the slope, some areas are more like 9-10 inches and some are closer to 3 inches.

Then the waiting game began. Watching as it froze over. The day finally came where it looked frozen enough to try it out.

It went great. We now have a backyard rink where my son can work on his skating and we can play hockey whenever he wants.

Now all I have to do is shovel every time there's snow and after every skate and use my homemade Zamboni (which there are plans all over the internet for) to make sure to keep it smooth and ready for the next skate.

Any questions or anyone tackling this project let me know and I'd be more than happy to offer some help or take some advice.
