Alfred Tennyson

He was born on August 6,1809 in Lincolnshire.He was educated at Trinity college,Cambrige,where he became acquainted with A.H.Hallam.He won the Chancellor Medel for English verse in 1829 with a poem Timbuctoo.In 1830,he published poems,chiefly lyrical.In 1832 he travelled with Hallam on the continent.Hallam died in 1833.In that year Tennyson began his In Memoriam expressive of his grief for his lost friend.He became engaged to Emily Sellwood,to whom,however,he was not married until 1850.In 1842,he published some of his finest works including Ulysses.In 1847,he published The princess and in 1850 In Memoriam,and was appointed Poet Laureate in succession to wordsworth in the following year.Tennyson died in 1892 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.A Life of him by his son was published in 1897.
