Introducing Monstera Deliciosa: Exotic Fruit of the Canary Islands
I'm gong to #SteemShare today a favorite exotic fruit or mine, Monstera Deliciosa the Delicious Monster. Native to Central America & the north part of South America, it is a tropical/sub tropical plant. It's easily grown across the western Canary Islands with their subtropical climate. Sometimes also called the 'Swiss cheese plant' because of the holes that form in the leaves not because of the way the fruit tastes.

Close ups of the green 'scales'
The fruit forms semi inside a coned 'flower petal' and develops a surface of hard green scales. Oblong with a blackish color core, the fruits underneath the scales are white and pyramid in shape attached to the core. To me the color and texture are similar to a cherimoya (custard apple) white and creamy.
The taste is not super sweet with a hint of pineapple. Really quite Delicious in deed.
WARNING- Do not attempt to remove the scales by force to eat the underlying fruit. You must allow the fruit to ripen and the scales to fall of naturally or only with the lightest of touch. If you pull the scales off before their time is ready you will feel the Teeth of the Monster. Really. You will feel hundreds of little pins & needles inside your mouth but will be unable to see anything. Best to let this fruit ripen on its own.
