Why Start a Radio Show? Part 2: Priming a Cultural GroundsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #life8 years ago

Yesterday we explained why in any cultural context, we people tend to only think of very objective things and products when it comes to “style.” We have an opportunity, through diverse media and creative forms, to broaden that perspective and understand how we are products of multi-faceted social climate around us.

So can we create forms of action to change our culture? Radio is a new medium for us because despite the technology having existed for such a long history, there are constantly innovative ways to apply the medium to new action. The political sphere is definitely new territory for advocacies.

Speaking on a Future

South Korea is a very traditional country where family values, levels of economic and social hierarchy, and social norms are enforced as unforgivingly as the monarchy we sustained for centuries before the 1900s. The country has only sustained a “democracy” (debatable under a number of our presidents) for a handful of decades and as such, exercising our 'democratic rights' is not an accustomed practice.

The significance of this is drastic as the country has yet to effectively approach major symptomatic issues such as a sexual violence, suicide, economic opportunity, social welfare, and so on. Infrastructurally, Korea is at the top among OECD nations. Socially (concerning citizen fulfillment and protection), it is consistently the lowest rated.

  • New shifts of political engagement

Hansik House seeks to change this. We want to motivate people to act on their principles, to seek a better future of our country's children and society's health as a whole. The first step for us is encouraging open discussion, to break down the personal barriers that are enforced by social conditions.

  • How do we deal with these concerns on the ground level?

Let me know what you think! We're trying to experiment with all forms of media to reach a larger audience and stimulate collective action. We've seen the incredible effort of a societal group during the past months, why not more collaborative efforts on all the things that affect us?
