Keeping Your Bedroom Doors Closed At Night May Save Your Life

in #life7 years ago (edited)

This may sound like a precaution not to get attacked by robbers or burglars, but it is far from it. Even if your house is as fortified as Fort Knox, you would nevertheless have to close the bedroom door before turning in for the night.

No one expects their house to be on fire, that is the reason fire alarms are important at home. They alert you, but most houses with fire alarm may be nonfunctional; batteries are dead. These are one of the most overlooked safety gadgets at home. The reason is simple, no one expects a fire at their home till it happens. Most houses, especially in Africa may just lack one. But a simple closed bedroom door may be the difference between life and death in the event of a fire.

Our Modern House; Our Flammable House

The fire could easily get out of control in modern houses within five minutes. This is due to modern furniture which can be as flammable as the petrol. Add to the mix a petrol stored in gallons, and you have yourself a ticking time bomb!

Today, house fires easily get out of control in less than five minutes of its occurrence compared to the houses in the sixties when it takes about half an hour. That means today to survive a house fire you have to be more proactive.

In the past, open floor spaces in homes are small, but now the spaces are big. That provides no obstruction to the fire, and it spreads rapidly.

Knock Knock

A closed door may not seem like much during a home fire, but researchers have proven that it has a significant effect on the overall outcome. This research was done by the Underwriters Laboratories Fire Safety Research Institute, an independent fire research team, showed that this small act of closing the doors has a big impact on fire.

During a fire, an open door room has a temperature of above 1000 °F, compared to a closed room, the temperature was significantly lower at 100°F. A burning fire requires oxygen to continue, closing the door starves the fire of oxygen.

There is even a more serious danger apart from fire and accompanying heat; the smoke. The toxic smoke from burning household devices, especially from plastic products, could easily suffocate someone sleeping with the bedroom door open as the smoke would have no hindrance whatsoever. Smoke inhalation is still the major cause of death in home fires.

Having an adequate fire exit, coupled with an escape plan and your bedroom doors close increases immensely your chance of getting out of the fire alive.

Always remember to close your door tonight. Thank you.

Valuable point and very well proven!
This is something everyone should read! Good job and very well done. Thank you for supporting @steemiteducation. Looking forward to seeing more posts like this...

You are most welcome.

Lol, I am guilty of this tho🙈... the door thingy is for my son whenever I hear any noise... Or whenever he wants to come join us and sleep together. Nice post.

How about getting a child cam? Electricity is still an issue I remember. We are in "dry season", I guess everyone should be more careful as fire breaks out easily.

Oh that's true but which light abi electricity to use with it? We all just have to be extremely careful like you advised.

Electricity is still the bane of our country. Everyone should be thinking of other alternative source of electric power.

Wow...who keeps bedroom door open to sleep? I cannot close my eyes to sleep if my bedroom door is not on lock and keys...i fear pass fear sef. Enjoyed reading @greenrun.

Most people do. Why? Afraid much? Oh, I see. At least you have one more thing to count on the positive side of keeping it closed.

Yeah, very afraid with doors open. There is just a sense of safe feeling that comes with my doors closed.
Most people do, really?

I used to keep mine open. I know the other doors are closed but knowing what I know now I keep it close.

Thank you @greenrun for this valuable information, I hardly do that but after reading this post, I have seen the neccesity to.

I'm glad you found it useful. Thank you too.

You are welcome dear.

Hello @greenrun

I have never experienced a fire but one thing I am sure of is the role that oxygen plays when it comes to fire.

But just like you said , we underestimate fire outbreaks till it actually happens, the last fire that happened in my school was started from a shop where a woman used to roast corn.

She did not quench the coals well before leaving and it was very windy that Night so embers were blown into the AC unit of the next shop and the AC gas took over.

Things quickly went out of hand and the Shop burnt to the ground along with Laptops and Phones that the owner secured there.

I will always remember to close my door at night when I am home.

That was a crazy freak sequence of events. Wow! Even a very imaginative writer could not come up with such a sequence. Talk about some life event being stranger than fiction.

I once experienced fire in my home town. The kitchen section of the house was totally gutted when one dude was burning tires beside it. It happened so quickly but the damage was extensive even with all the help we got from people helping to put away the fire. Scary day.

It was real bro, that was the first day I saw a fire truck live in action

Lol. You guys have low traffic congestion on the roads. If it's in Lagos, before the fire truck would get there, it'd be charred remnants of the building that would be left standing.

Am guilty! I only get doors closed when am in someone's house visiting. Am very okay with having an escape door or fire exit and possibly an alarm or something which I not have yet.

But what if all these things aee not available and the door is locked, then the fire finds its way into the room and there is no escape.

Maybe today is just one of those days I go off. But if the door is opened one can easily hear or percieve the smoke at its earliest stage and maybe call the fire service or even rush to get neighbours to help quench the fire before it blows out. I Stand to be corrected on this though.

Very thoughtful post. Thank you for calling our attention to this. It will really help.

Thanks for your awesome contribution. You make meaningful contribution appear easy. Where are those "nice post" people? Come and learn from this awesome steemian.

Nice post.

post nice.

😢😢

😁😁😂😂

Keep running friend.

Well, i didnt really know a closed door has a tendency to save ones live during a fire outbreak. Its good to know. What about the light? If the light is on or off does it also affect how quickly the fire spreads?

Electricity can help the fire spread quicker. But you can't because throw your house into darkness. Thanks.

A serious topic but you made this really interesting, fun and engaging.

Lot of people do not know this and I will pass the info...

So when I see a burning house, I will surely shout "Close the doors, close the doors!!

Lol.

Welldone

It does help reduce the oxygen in circulation and quickly help douse the flames in record time.

Good to know.

Thanks dear

You are welcome

Great, one more nightmare scenario to keep me up at night ... 😑

@alexander.alexis it is a jungle out there. But that shouldn't keep any one awake.

Good policy to follow. It gives me time to break the bedroom window and get us out of the house.

Yes, it sure does.
