The bed game changer

in #life6 years ago

One of the biggest downsides of being a bit transient and renting fully-furnished serviced apartments is normally the furniture. For the most part none of this stuff is going to be quality. We are constantly subjected to Ikea-style chip-board stuff and uncomfortable sofas etc.

These can all be taken in stride but the real heart (and back) breaker is the mattresses.

As the ex owner of a guesthouse, I am well aware of how expensive "good" mattresses are and how just one guest can completely destroy them. Therefore a frugal owner's answer to this is normally to buy one of the "rugged" mattresses that exist on the planet and this normally means that said mattress is going to absolutely suck.

Mine was so firm / hard that honestly, I don't think it really served a purpose. It had the same characteristics as the wood that it is sitting on so I don't really feel as though It was offering any sort of comfort benefit. I found this out on my first night and the next morning when i woke up with my back killing me, I knew i needed to do something about it.

So I jumped on Lazada (it's like Amazon, but in South East Asia) and found a memory foam mattress topper for 1,700,000 VND (around $70.) This is a little more than i wanted to spend on it but in my experience, the "down" ones don't stay fluffy for very long so i figured i would splurge.

It came wrapped in like a million pieces of tape and for some reason i was trying to preserve the bag it came in as if i was every going to use that again. In the end i wish I had simply cut the bag open.

It fit the mattress perfectly and man oh man does it make a difference. It is like a totally new bed and last night when I laid down on it..... it was exactly what the title says... a "game changer."

In the end it passed the "me" test but there is one test that is far more important than what i think about it.

Fortunately, Nadi approved as well and she ended up making sleepies there for a lot of the day. Today I woke up without back issues and that is worth the 70 dollars on its own. I think this goes without saying but this is one of the most important purchases in South East Asia, if not the world. Owners of affordable housing are never going to spend a lot on your mattress - so it is up to us to make them decent and if that can be accomplished for under $100 - I'm happy.

Glad you got that sorted out for so cheap. I need to figure something out for my bed, as it has been jamming its cock straight into my back every night for the past few weeks. Shit is not fun.

i would imagine they have the same stuff on amazon where you live. A cheaper option that i used in college when i was in USA was that sound-proofing foam they use in recording studios can be cut to any size and put under the sheets. That worked well for me back in the day.

Yes, but you forget that I put all of my money into v-bucks. That's the true investment, baby boi.

But, yeah. A king size memory foam that is at least 4-5 inches thick would run about $220-300, so I'm just gonna deal with having my back jack hammered probably. At least for a few months.

Oh, yeah. It's been going raw with no rubber on me for weeks. At this point I'll probably have to hold a seance to resurrect my back.

I did the same thing + same price also, when I rented the condo in BKK.

Big plus (kinda), when I have guests stay over, I just pull down the topper and either Me or guests, sleep in bed and the other on the topper on the floor..

Seems like you're settling in slowly! Once back in Asia, I might visit.. Never been to the city :D

well now that I know they are available online pretty much everywhere I won't stress about getting a good mattress anywhere over here ever again. They aren't really that expensive and it changes everything immediately.

I think you would enjoy it here especially since every time i order food it is an adventure since I don't know what really anything is.

Awesome purchase! We have had one of these for the bed in our trailer for quite some time now. When I was younger I never realized why mattresses cost so much. Now that I am older and I have one that I spent probably close to $1000 on I totally understand why you would make that big of an investment. You spend a good portion of your life in bed, so why wouldn't you want it to be comfortable. Memory foam has come a long way. These toppers used to be really hot and they didn't breathe very well. Like I said, they are so much better now.

Nadi certainly deserved your gift, I'm sure...??? :>)

Hey buddy, aren't you using Discord? I left you a message that I think you might be interested in

A decent mattress is the most important thing we can have. I suffer from back issues and literally shit myself when sleeping in hotels. You know you are in trouble when your head is up and so are your feet meaning you are sleeping in a boat like bed. I have learned to pay a little extra and not risk visiting chiropractors and physios abroad. Memory foam is good, but be careful as it changes with heat. The hotter it is the less support it offers.

Haha! Yes!! It got Nadi’s approval with a good rest upon it. I can understand what you saying here. The last time I experienced this type of thing was college. Now I had some good pass out drunk sleeps on the college mattress, but Then shortly after appreciated a good nights sleep. Have upgraded every so often since then. This last time I mortgaged the mattress. Temprapedic. Cha Ching. But awesome purchase. Beautiful sleep experience.

Oh cute Nadi! Can’t get enough. I was just thinking about here and you today as I was writing a blog post and including Pepper in there. Wondering if her hair was growing back! Haha.

Great thinking and relatively cheap way to solve that problem gooddream, I didn't know a topper like that would turn it into a comfortable bed, that's good to know!

i didn't think about it until i moved into a house that had a particularly uncomfortable mattress.... these days I just expect the places to provide terrible beds and plan accordingly. It is kind of part and parcel of living in cheapish furnished places though.

Yes sir, that makes sense especially in light of the fact that renters destroy nice mattresses!
