Recipe: How to make your dogs healthy through making their food instead of buying.

in #life7 years ago (edited)

The recipe in images below is something a little different from normal recipe posts.  It is dog food, based originaly on an idea from @jennswall @finleyexp @apothecae , who had been feeding their dog this type of diet for some time.  My two Bedlington Terriers had bad breath and released 'aromas' shall we say from the other end too.  I could not get the food they were used to in England, here in Spain, and their diet here obviously had an 'adverse' effect on them.  My friends'recipe was good but as I am won't to do, I have significantly changed it, so here is my dog food recipe in images:

Firstly, get some liver.  This is a pack of pigs liver from the supermarket.  It cost me 1.40 Euros

Cut up into bite size pieces and put into a large pan.

Add a couple of handfulls of lentils.  Put on heat and saute.

Meanwhile, save all of your vegetables which are a little 'iffy'. Also the roots of vegetables and other vegetables you have spare.

Chop up to bite size pieces.

Add to the pan along with the liver and lentils and stir together.

Sweat the vegetable and meat mixture a little, then fill the pan with boiling water.

Cook until the lentils and vegetables begin to soften.  The water will take on flavour from the liver and vegetables.

Measure out two cups of rice.  I use the cheapest long grain rice I can buy.

Add the rice to the pan and stir well.  Put a pan lid on top.

Cook for about 5 minutes until the rice starts to swell and take up some of the cooking liquid.

Take the pan off the heat and put the lid back on.  Cover with a cloth and leave for half an hour or so.

The rice will have absorbed all of the liquid and cooked through.

Stir well to make sure the meat and vegetables are dispersed equally amongst the rice.

When cooler, transfer the rice into plastic lidded containers suitable for freezing.  This amount of rice made 6 containers of dog food.  One container is sufficient for both my dogs, fed twice a day.  I quarter each container and they get 1/4 at each meal. I freeze the rest but always have one out in the fridge to use daily.  I take a frozen one out to thaw for use the next day.  This pan makes 5 days food for two dogs!

They absolutely love it.  It is healthy, no added salt or preservatives, and, best of all, their breath no longer smells.  Niether does the other end!  They are healthy and their teeth look a lot cleaner too.

Give this a try.  I make the mixture twice a week.  Apart from chopping the liver and vegetables, it is not a labour intensive recipe; and will save you money too.

Until the next time, Adios Amigos from 'sunny' Spain. X

Sorry, busy last night preparing candy for market on Friday! It is a great recipe, easy to do, and the dogs love it. What's more, they are healthier. Thank you for your interest. X

i would eat that in a heartbeat! look delicious! Great Job!

Yes, I do a similar dish with chicken and vegetables for supper. I do though use decent vegetables for myself. The dog food uses up stuff you would normally throw away! Thank you for your comment. X

I'm so glad that this recipe is working for you, and for them as well!

Thank you. A great initial idea!!! X

Excellent post-- and recipe. We switched from store-bought "hypo allergenic" dog food which still made our dog itchy to the home made variety (mostly based on ground beef and rice) and she is so much happier and healthier now. Not to mention, we've gone from paying about 90 USD a month for dog food to about 40 USD using our own ingredients!

Great isan't it and so easy to do. Why more people allow the multi-nationals to add plastic 'filer' to their complete meals, and go and buy it, is beyond me. Thank you for your comments. X
