The Ankle Boot Girl

IMG_1470.JPG

On our recent foray into the Southlands I came across an observation that has stuck with me. One morning my family and friends decided to take a hike, and in true morning ritual fashion, we had to stop by the coffee shop for caffeinated sustenance. I'm a bit of a life scene bobblehead, and I am constantly taking in all the various colors, smells, and shapes that surround me in any given locale. The coffee shop that we were in did not disappoint.

There was the aroma of freshly roasted beans permeating my nostrils. The strong scent of the righteous free trade coffee smothered the wafting fragrance of the pastry case that the barista was making bee-like visits to. Throughout the black and white checkerboard floor of the shop, little iron tables perched in random clusters, most of them adorned with other morning brew seekers.

A large chalkboard covered all of the wall to the left of the entrance door, it's surface colorfully adorned with epicurean delights such as shepherd's bread avocado toast and spinach and bacon quiche. The entire setting was humming to a beat of the baristas' shoes squeaking and foam gushing into all manner of individualistically concocted sippers.

The whole back wall was one big drink order board, full of multiple coffee and tea manifestations sure to delight one's taste buds. Americano, Macchiato, Latte, and hibiscus tea were all in attendance . The list and variations of the world's favorite comfort drinks were almost endless and overwhelmed one's decision making center with just one gaze.

It was while I was waiting my turn that I focused my observational beam on the creature that was standing right in front of me. She was a young, slender woman. Aside from the fact that she was right in front of me, I would have noticed her anyway, for she was very fashionably attired. Adorning her lean form was a fitted cream-colored cable knit sweater and a patchwork cow hide type of fabric mini skirt. Completing the ensemble were a pair of black leather ankle boots. Her outfit was both sophisticated yet had a bit of individualistic flair and I smiled in creative approval.

Now, being close to the Earth in height and not one to make people feel uncomfortable, I often find myself looking down at the ground, it was as I cast my eyes upon the floor that I noticed Ankle Boot Girl rise up on her tip toes to get a better look at the order board. It was then that I saw the blood. The poor child had bleeding blisters the size of silver dollars on both of her ankles! We are not talking about a small amount of blood either, those weeping sores were gushing red fluid down into her boots.

I sucked in air. The saying "Beauty is pain" flashed through my cortex and I instantly wondered multiple thoughts. Was this girl's life so busy that she just didn't have the time to slap a bandage or moleskin onto the wounds? Every step that she had to take must have smarted a bit, I mean her ankle flesh was more gouged that the surface of the moon. I love fashionable clothing, but I kind of think that I would draw the line or at least mitigate the damage that a pair of Iron Maiden-like boots would cause.

Banana-cat seeks comfort at all times...

The Ankle Boot Girl stuck with me for the rest of my trip and beyond. Her actions and apparent willingness to suffer discomfort for whatever reason really bothered me. Have we as a society neglected to place a focus on having enough sense to tend to things in a rational manner? Do we constantly have to be in such a hurry that we neglect to care for ourselves sufficiently? Slapping a bandage on a blister takes about ten seconds, stopping for coffee takes at least five minutes. The whole observation made me feel like a common sense ratio was off somewhere.

I imagine there are things that all of us do that defy sense and reason. I know that I am sure guilty of this type of life wellness infraction on occasion. Twenty-first century life is so often harried that I know many people just go through their familiar patterns of behavioral motions. However, I am going to try to be more mindful about my ankle boot missteps as I trod through daily life. If I have a blister that is festering, perhaps I need to tend to it instead of grabbing a coffee. Just like if I have a child that needs an extra few minutes of parental focus, then perhaps I should leave off posting my post at the time I want. Or maybe I need to really get that pinched nerve in my neck that I have been living with checked out instead of just suffering through it so I don't deviate from my daily grind. Everywhere I look there are examples of misplaced focus, little life blisters so to speak. Redirecting attention is never a bad thing, not when that gaze lights upon correcting behaviors that are detrimental to our daily wellness.

So, how about you all? Are there blisters that you are putting up with so you can keep up with your routine?

And as always, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's blister-free iPhone.

Well ... generikat, I have to admit a pension for the loving of the boots. For shoes ... I tend to go with comfort. I am happy enough to tread around in the cheapest of flip flops in the warmest weather or cheap cheaper sneakers. But boots ... yes I will spend the dough. As I have aged, I have learned to include comfort in my buying choices but when I was younger, I did indeed take the pain.

I remember these one pair of velvet ankle boots, they were beautiful. I wore them out one night and about half way through, my feet felt a pain I could never imagine and let's say I was a fair bit vodka self-medicated. Nevertheless, I was about to slip into a pain coma. I told my friend about the pain. Such was the beauty of my sadistic boots that she readily agreed to switch shoes with me. They looked just that good.

It is all about priorities and pain tolerance. Part of me admires this masochistic fashionista. When the zombie apocalypse comes, I'm getting behind her.

LOL good one Pryde! I never took you for one to suffer for image, yet I do agree, the fashionista is a player you want on your team when push comes to shove!

I got a blister today ... from my new sneakers ... lol:)

Oh my, the ballad of the velvet ankle boots hit me right in the memory bank! As a fellow shoe and especially boot lover, I so understand! I still have a few pairs of footwear that I love and wear solely for aesthetic reasons, but I tend to find myself taking comfort into account more often than naught these days.

Ankle Boot girl has to have quite a pain tolerance, and I had a good chuckle at your zombie apocalypse comment, LOL! I guess I need to be more like my grandma and mom and have one of everything in my purse, could have offered her a bandage myself;o)

Thank you so much for sharing your footwear insights @prydefoltz! I love your comments!

Glad I gave you a chuckle ... I love that 'the ballade of the velvet ankle boot' ... there could bea poem in the making with that.

It is good to be smart in our lives. But I do not like being smart in torturing our own body.
I will wear good clothes, shoes for our beauty. But due to the beauty that will cause my body to feel uncomfortable, I do not know what kind of beauty it is!!!! @generikat

I hear ya! Enjoying smart attire is better than letting your attire outsmart you, lol! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts:o)

It's not men oppressing women by making them wear impractical and uncomfortable clothing like that. Just sayin'.

Ha ha! I find that a lot of people will endure all manner of foolishness in the name of impressing, yet ascribe blame so as to not self-reflect. Peeps be cool like that;o)

Beauty is Pain.I don't think soooo! Yes shoes are gorgeous.Especially high heels. But Pamcooks is near the clouds. My balance is terrible.I would have to sue myself before i dare put on anything uncomfortable just to fit in or look cool.😂Give me a good pair of trainers (sneakers) or flats anyday. My feet only blister up in new shoes. One tip i swear by is if you have ill fitting painful heels or shoes spray deodorant on your feet and inside the shoe.Your feet wont sweat and less friction inturn less blisters. If all else fails go shoeless.Nothing like walking bare footed!! 👣

The deodorant tip is excellent! You are a gem!

Even though I am fond of footwear as a whole, I find that I tend spend as much time as possible without any type of shoe on. Bare-footed rules!

Your replies always make me laugh, I hope that you are clad in a pair of trainers today and that your balance has been mostly on point, lol!

Lol.Well my balance was on point until yet again it snowed in the middle of March.I was sliding like a drunk Elsa & Anna trying to put my glorious bins out!😂I was just glad it was the weekend would be an hilarious site on the school run.
Barefoot is the one.Nothing like going back to the prehistoric ages.In all fairness the state of my hair at the moment even the neanderthals would have something to say.lol.Glad you liked my tip I hope it works for you.👍🏼

Hi @generikat, so glad you bought this topic up. It seems that few people have respect for our time or their appearance or how they treat other people. I am constantly amazed when I run into a truly kind person, that goes out of the way to assist me or gives me something unexpectedly.
Sometimes the one person can put the hope of human kindness back into my day. The poor barista probably forgot about her ankles because of the demanding people we have become.Good post. 🐓🐓

Hi there M2C! You know, it's interesting that you mentioned that point about consideration, in the same coffee shop that I ran into Ankle Boot Girl, I also happened to pick up a pair of sunglasses for a lady who dropped her pair while trying to juggle a whole bunch of drinks. She looked at me like I was an alien for stopping to help her. I swear to you, she was in awe that I would assist her! It makes me sad that it has become odd or uncommon to help or treat people with kindness as a rule. However, I know you're out there, along with others, so there is plenty of good still:o) Hope you are having a lovely weekend!!

It appears steamians are dropping like flies during this lull in steem price. We are here for the long term, hope you are too. Plenty of time to write new posts. I must be nuts even skipped the library today.🐓🐓

I'm so very glad to hear that you are sticking around for the long Steemit haul. Every time things get a little dicey with the Steem or SBD price, or platform mover and shaker drama occurs, people tend to flee. I liked and stuck around when Steem was .09, I plan on staying even if it tripped on back down there because I love the place and its users:o).

Hopefully you made it to the library today!

No library again toda. Can you believe it? Raining cats and dogs all day so Iposted a little piece and got some indoor trappings done. Do you get the mental picture of cats and dogs falling to the ground like I do every time I think about it raining so hard? Steemit is all about the people. 🐓🐓

Now I really am wondering how long her ankles had been bleeding, and why she hadn't done anything about it. That's really sad. I have my share of foot issues, but none of them are caused by fashionable footwear.

You know, to have blisters of that breadth and depth, I am thinking that they had been there for awhile and ongoing:o( Poor thing! Foot issues are horrid enough without self-inflicting them!

Well I know it may shock you, but the Old Guy is not one to trade comfort for fashion. I know it is very hard to believe, but alas true nonetheless lol.

I am utterly gobsmacked! This is an Earth shattering revelation! LOL! Good to know that at least someone is chilling in maximum comfort!

This post hit a nerve (no pun intended). Somehow a chiropractor visit is always pushed to the back burner until something sorely hurts. Must get on that maintenance schedule again. Thank you for the reminder!
