Is Democracy what they paint it to be?

Does Democracy Really Work?

I am just going to show some examples from the English speaking countries as they are supposed to be among the most democratic.

First the Scottish independence movement: 2,001,926 (55.3%) voting against independence and 1,617,989 (44.7%) voting in favor. So democracy is what 2 million want never mind what 1.6 million want.

Then we’ve had Brexit this one was about 17.4 for and 16.1 against, so again we have a majority not that large deciding what everyone should do.

But the craziest system of all is in the United States where the president is elected not by popular votes but by electoral votes. Now I am not Trump bashing he isn’t the only one who has become president without winning the popular vote.

This is a list I found, I hope it is correct:

1824: John Quincy Adams.
1876: Rutherford B. Hayes.
1888: Benjamin Harrison.
2000: George W. Bush.
2016: Donald Trump.

So let us see what could happen with this electoral vote system, if a candidate were to win the following 12 states by one vote each, that candidate would be president regardless if he didn’t get a single vote in any of the remaining 38 states, so he would be president because he was able to get one more vote than his opponent in just 12 states. The other guys popular vote victory would be by a landslide but that wouldn’t matter.

California 55
Texas 34
New York 31
Florida 27
Illinois 21
Pennsylvania 21
Michigan 17
N. Carolina 15
Georgia 15
Virginia 13
Massachusetts 12
Indiana 11

Then you would hear but the electoral voters could change that. Really, and go against the will of the people they are representing. Wouldn’t that be undemocratic?

Now this isn’t about the US or Britain (I could include Catalonia, the Kurds etc) I am just showing three examples of events that are thought to be examples of democracy but are they really the will of the people? No they are the will of some of the people, so democracy to me is just a hyped up idea, no better than anything else we have. I mean people go on about how evil totalitarian states are, and yet I bet you they have a nice amount of people who agree with their policies or else they would have been out a long time ago.

Sort:

democracy, like much else...does not scale well.
it works well in a very small group..
but not so well in large one..

furthermore...in the image the word 'freedom' appears.
freedom and liberty have little to do with democracy.
democracy has been said to be the 'rule of the majority'.
the key word there is RULE.
Not much freedom to those who are RULED.
