Honduras-Crisis

in #life7 years ago (edited)

In what I consider is an incredible turn in events the Honduras police has refused to follow orders and are now not patrolling during the illegal curfew decreed by the government. Amazingly the ones who started let's say defecting were the COBRAS these are the national police's most elite unit, I mean these guys are real good, when anyone here hears they are coming everyone runs, well these guys decided they had had enough of going after people so they just went to their headquarters and said that that was that.

After a couple of hours the whole police force had adopted the same attitude, so now the only ones who are enforcing the curfew are the Military Police which as I told you are the current president's personal guard. Also some army elements are supposed to be out in the streets, this I don't know for sure as I can only tell you what is happening here in La Ceiba.

The curfew never really worked, somehow the people here are not afraid of the police or soldiers so there were still people in the streets and in the two largest cities they still had protests, about 5 civilians were killed and also at least three policemen, so don't think it has been easy.

Now we have the European Union and the OAS observers saying that in reality the vote count was very dubious and they would like a recount. I don't think that will help, by this time the side that loses will go out and the fighting will continue. Personally I think the only solution is to dissolve the government, place some sort of civil-military junta in charge of the country and hold elections somewhere around February and have members of international organizations count the votes, if not this will never end.

Here we are already having shortages of everything because there is only one highway through which products come here and the bridges on this road are constantly being blocked, so the gas stations are out of gas, the supermarkets are mostly empty. Of course we do have a local wharf so I guess if the shortages are too severe we could still bring in the basic articles via boats.

Well that's all for now, let's see how this turns out in the end.

If you recall the other day I said something like:
if you have to enforce the rules...you have the wrong rules

Guess what? Your national police force might think so too. At least in this case.
