Giant Sharks?

There have been stories of giant sharks along the north coast of Honduras I guess always. The first one I heard was in Utila which is an island, I was told that after the Cuban revolution a wooden cargo vessel, somewhere around 50 feet long (I did get to see that vessel, it was still operable 15 years later) made the trip to Utila bringing the family that owned the boat plus some others. Before entering the harbour one of the guys saw an incredibly large shark and had the brilliant idea of taking a few shots with a rifle he had and must have wounded the creature. This shark struck back and nearly sunk the vessel, luckily they were able to make it into the harbour which is quite shallow, the shark couldn't follow them and all they suffered was a very damaged boat and of course the fright these people must have felt. I am guessing these animals must be at least 40 feet long.

I heard some more stories like one where a shrimp boat was going full throttle and couldn't move and the reason was that a great shark was stuck on some cable or netting and was going the other way, they had to cut the cables to be able to get away. And then a friend told me that once he was on a shrimp boat and a shark was following them and its head was about as wide as the boats stern. Somehow I don't believe these two stories, but who knows.

But in the 90's we did have sightings of a very big animal, some pictures were even taken from an airplane that was going to the islands ant they were able to take the pictures of what appeared to be a giant shark. Some unfortunate things happened also, by this time I was sometimes sent to Puerto Castilla to supervise load operations on some ships, and one of the guys who used to do stevedoring work was also a diver, he dived for shrimp, lobster, or of course fish. Well on one of his diving trips he went missing and a big search was made for him, all that was ever found was one of his feet, supposedly something extremely large bit him.

I don't know what type of sharks this big guys could be, but they do exist around here, I guess they might be the whale sharks which tourists come to watch at certain times of the year, now how they got to be so big is something I don't know. The closest I have ever been to a shark was via stories my Dad used to tell me about when he used to go out hunting for sharks for Borden Fish Mills back in the 40's, he used to be a diver and hunt them with spear guns, but I'm guessing those were small sharks.
