Râșnov Citadel - a part of the Romanian heritage
Râșnov Citadel
Rasnov is mentioned for the first time in 1331, (almost 700 years ago). The development of Rasnov in the 13th century suffered a heavy blow back the invasion of the Tartars in 1241. In order to defend themselves against future invasions and against the violations of the feudal nobles, the inhabitants of Rasnov have raised this refuge and defense city on the top of a nearby hill.
The Rasnov Fortress has a simple architectural style, close to the construction of the usual houses, adapted to the fortification requirements, the medieval air preserving itself after 500 years of existence. Stone and brick were used as fortification materials, the height of the walls is 5 meters, and the largest width is the southern wall, which in some places has a meter and a half.
From three parts, south, west and north, the walls are bordered by high slopes (about 150m tall), very difficult to climb. The entire upper vault is sheltered by outer towers grouped on the north side and the western corner. The eastern part of the fortress was more vulnerable in terms of natural obstacles, because it was easy to pass. In order to strengthen the defense capacity, the fortress presents the strongest fortifications in this sector.
I invite you to visit this beautiful ancient place!
