TOMMI: a virtual reality game for children with cancer

I want to tell you a story...

Imagine a child with cancer, forced to live in hospital, far from his parents and schoolmates.
Fear, pain, and stress caused by the disease lead him to reject any therapy, risking to compromise its efficacy, and doctors no longer know what to do.
In their place, what would you do to help him?

We have thought that every child likes to play, and starting from this idea we developed TOMMI.

TOMMI is a digital game based on virtual reality and developed to reduce stress and pain in hospitalized children with cancer and their caregivers, who can play remotely with them, collecting during the game informations about patient’s psychomotor skills, useful to monitor his performance during therapy.

TOMMI is also based on a collaborative gameplay involving both children and their caregivers by supporting them both in the therapeutic path.

The project aims to improve the adherence to oncology therapy by patients, improving the quality of hospitalization and patient-to-doctor relationship while at the same time providing a growing amount of data about psychomotor capabilities related to the type of disease and the course of the therapy itself.

Fortunately, around the world, there are only 300,000 new cases each year and about 80% of them manage to overcome the disease and overcome the 5-year follow-up.

Me and my team are working hard every day on TOMMI to reach our mission: help and improve their life into the hospital.
