Upcycling - Make products out of somebody else’s waste and turn trash into treasure

in #life6 years ago (edited)

Urban India today produces nearly 48 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually. The alarming rate of waste generation in the country will soon land us in a deep waste-management trouble.

There is a need for solutions that are sustainable and can reduce our waste burden. The answer is upcycling – make products out of somebody else’s waste and turn trash into treasure.

Rimagined from Bangalore employs women from underprivileged sections of the society to make upcycled products.

From suave bags fashioned from tetra packs, denim and other textile wastes to fancy tea coasters made using motherboards and vinyl records, Rimagined’s range of upcycled products is indeed a revelation for even the most cynics.

The unit has upcycled approximately 60-70 tonnes of varying categories of waste until now.

Stuff such as fabric scrap, denim waste, broken glass, wood scrap, tyre and tyre tube waste, cement sacks, tetra packs to list a few materials, are majorly upcycled by Rimagined.

Process of upcycling involves sourcing waste, sifting and cleaning the material to become usable as raw material, product design, product creation, quality check, and finally, marketing.

This is a brilliant idea that helps the country manage its waste in a creative and sustainable manner and at the same time, helping women from financially strapped households to take control of their lives with dignity and pride.
