Is it still considered quiet time if your mind will not shut up? Once everything is quiet, the five or six personalities that occupy space in my head argue with each other...sometimes quite loudly. Meditation is difficult, because like many, for me, once every thing is quiet my brain shifts into high gear. Although what you are suggesting sounds different than meditation because in that you are trying to empty your mind... not actively work through things.
