Another tip to eliminate negative thinking is to replace your negative thinking with positive thinking after interrupting your over-thinking style.
This is the hardest, especially when there really is nothing positive, except from being alive maybe.
I think writing these thoughts in a paper and throwing them away like you said, should help. I should try this. But then, in those dark corners, the thoughts would still grab at you. Or so i feel :(
