Kids tend to learn from adults. If you put them off on simple things they may not have trust in you. If you take your time to explain to them why you said "no", they start listening.

Very useful @fataelrumy. Another way to ban children is not to answer "yes" or "no" to them, but give them another choice in answering their request. For example, if a toddler asks for a candy, answer his request by offering a choice of fruit or bread. He will learn that we reject it indirectly, but positively. (-:
