Returning Beer Bottles in the Philippines

in #life10 years ago (edited)

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a cannabis connoisseur. After growing up believing that marijuana is the devil's lettuce and considering it harmful for a good portion of my life, I discovered that it's useful for creativity, concentration, and athletic performance (among other things).

Unfortunately, much of the weed here in the Philippines - or, as locals call it, "weeds" - resembles dirt more than anything. It's worse than what we call "shwag" in Miami, and it has no medicinal value whatsoever. Good herb is available in certain areas, but it's not always easy to come by, and the sad state of affairs regarding cannabis supply was made apparent to me on my first day here.

Now, those who know me know that there are three psychoactive substances that I appreciate a regular use of: coffee, cannabis, and moderate (very moderate) amounts of alcohol. Regarding the latter, there's some awesome stuff sold around the corner for about a dollar a liter. It's a coconut booze called lambanog - good, strong stuff with a great taste - and I'll probably dedicate an entire post to it.

Anyway, shortly after landing in Manila for the first time and settling in with my wife in the province of Cavite, I thought, "No herb? I'm gettin' myself a beer." To my surprise, I discovered that beer bottles are usually returned in exchange for a small deposit that's left upon purchase. Such is the case in neighborhood "sari-sari" stores and even in places like 7-Eleven. Go figure!

Below is a video of Marilyn and I returning two beer bottles a couple of months ago. (They were both mine.)

Lambanog wine made from coconut. Quezon province in philippines is the producer of it and thats the place where i lived. Marijuana is not legal here. Our new president is very strict when its come to that matter.

Hi. Kumusta? Lambanog is strong stuff. I'm from Miami and marijuana is illegal there too. For years, I've enjoyed and benefitted from it anyway, since I don't highly regard unjust laws. Imoral ang pagkulong o itratong kriminal ang tao dahil sa paggamit ng marijuana. Drug prohibition is immoral, ineffective, and highly problematic on numerous levels.

Yep if u used marijuana they chink u r a criminal. If u used drugs patay ka kay duterte. Kill drugs and kill people using it. Thats the reason many pips in the philippines almost killed.

It's sad, talaga. Lots of people are being murdered because of the immoral laws and policies that are in place. I don't like drug abuse, but I'm a strong opponent of the war on drugs and of statism in general. Hence, I'm no supporter of Duterte.

I dont even vote him on the election coz im not registered voter. But thank you. Welcome to philippines. Our country is beautiful just keep discovering.
Kapag umiinon kami ng lambanog nung high school nilalagyan namin ng mountain dew para di mahalata kpag papasok sa school haha ok ang lasa may tama lng ng konti, share lng.
