Christmas in Croatia!

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Here in Croatia, preparations for Christmas start on 25th November which is St Catherine's day and we also celebrate Advent.

Advent is a season observed in many Western Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas.

Christmas wreath

It is traditional to have an Advent wreath made of straw or evergreen twigs which has four candles.
The wreath symbolizes endlessness and the four candles symbolize different parts of history and life:

  1. candle- Hope
  2. candle - Faith
  3. candle- Joy
  4. candle - Love

A fifth candle is sometimes added in the centre which is lit on Christmas!

Christmas Trees are very popular and they are decorated on Christmas Eve but some put them up and decorate on St Nicholas's Day ( like my family). In Croatia they are traditionally decorated with ornaments in the shapes of fruit. They used to be real fruits ( but not so popular) or persevered candied fruits that were sometimes covered in gold!

This is mine tree, my sister put that baloon and I have no idea why :)

This won't last long :D

Presents are normally exchanged on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
But instead of gifts...

Nala found her place :)

Marry Christmas or in Croatian " Sretan Božić!"

With love,
