Getting defensive.

in #life7 years ago (edited)

No matter who you are.

When touched in the axioms everyone gets violent. The default of our nature is violence. That's just life. If you are ultra-rational you can get taken advantage of. Those who don't defend the core of their programming don't pass on their genes.

One of the most beautiful subjects to learn in maths is game theory. It shows the optimal strategies when in front of a perfectly rational adversary. Curiously enough if you use game theory while playing by the book you will most likely lose. Because your opponents are most of the time not optimally rational.

But that's only if one uses only one strategy.
If you go and take a look at the Wikipedia page for different types of games in game theory you will find that almost every situation in life is a mixture of many of this mini-games.

If you can master them, nobody will want to play again with you.

When you dig with a stick someone's beliefs you are entering a game. Where you lose if they get violent. This game is known as the "Keynesian beauty contest".

Small example.

"you don't judge based on fundamental value but based on crowd value"

For instance, what in the crypto community is called fear of missing out F.O.M.O. comes to mind.

What happens when you have a crowd in a guessing contest is that as they gain experience they start approaching the "Nash equilibrium" this means the optimal solution for the benefit of the most people (roughly speaking). The problem is when you introduce new players that lack the intelligence or the experience. They revert the rationality of the group as a whole and increase the opportunity for some of the older participants in the game to control the new group for their own gains.

What is best for the group sometimes is not the best for the individual. This is the prisoner's dilemma. The smarter the individual the more incentives it has to default the group.

Now let's suppose you were to explain to someone. For instance that by expanding cryptocurrencies to mass adoption you would eliminate effectively a huge portion of the wealth of the world. Getting the poor poorer and the rich richer.

What about forks in coins as a form of inflation. or the fact that the transaction fees and inflation are thousand of times more expensive than the traditional banking system? or what about how transaction are forever recorded and entry points to exchange can be asked for the records of all the users?

But hey, hey, Is just an example. I myself I'm using and loving cryptos. My interest here is to show how we can approach this situation where the core values that guide our actions can be turned meaningless, especially when dealing with others.

Morality works as an immune system

You can desensitize by exposing gradually to small old perceived threats by being relatable. Imagine you are a set try to find intersections.
So they get better not bitter.

This strategy, although no perfect is called tit-for-tat. In a contest of game theory with just 4 lines of code Anatole Rapoport created an algoritm that's almost unbetable. It consisted of roughly speaking.
1- In an itterative interaction always be nice the first time
2- Reciprocate with equal intensity ( hit softly who hit you softly)
3- Forgive and offer peace but always retaliate
4- Profit.

See you.

That was interesting.

Glad it was interesting. Maybe you would find also interest in some of my other posts. They have cool pictures or something.
