7 things you did not know about your own body - 你不知道自己身体的7件事

in #life7 years ago

Number 1: In 1 year alone your heart will have pumped 40 million times. This means that if you live for 70 years (to put a figure), your heart will have pumped about 2,800 million times. In other words, you would have to drink 4 glasses of water a day for 4 months just to match the amount of blood your heart pumped every hour.

Number 2: On average you are 1 inch taller when you wake up in the morning. When you sleep, excess fluid from your body is stored inside your intervertebral discs and the stress of standing during the day causes the fluids to seep out, making you smaller. If you measure your height early in the morning and again in the night, you will notice a small but visible difference.

Number 3: Have you ever wondered what the gibberish is? It is a mixture of dust, blood cells, skin cells and calcified mucus. During the day, the lagañas help to prevent the tears of your eyeballs from evaporating and also keep your eyes tightly closed while you sleep. While we sleep, we do not blink, so during the nights the lagañas accumulate and when we wake up in the morning we notice them.

Number 4: Everyone knows about the organs that we have inside our body, but, the skin is also, it is an organ by itself like any other. The skin is the living blanket that covers us and regenerates tens of thousands of cells every few seconds. The skin sheds old skin constantly and is such a prominent organ that it represents about 12% of our total weight.

Number 5: For every pound of weight you increase, your body needs to create new blood networks to accommodate that new pound of weight. That is to say, that your body creates new blood vessels every time you increase weight. It also means that your heart must pump faster to supply that new workload, which leads to a reduction in the oxygenation of other tissues. Luckily, when you lower that pound, your body will reabsorb those redundant blood vessels in other tissues.

Number 6: It has always been believed that we have 5 senses, vision, taste, sound, smell and touch, but in fact there are many more missing. In addition to these we have the pressure, proprioception with which you can feel your own body parts, tension sensors for muscles, thirst, hunger and magnetorrecepcion to detect magnetic fields. A very debated issue is whether our ability to perceive time is a singular sense within us or is something that has to do with the brain, as a whole.

Number 7: If you've ever tickled yourself you know it does not work, right? The reason for this is that your brain actually anticipates the sensation. The brain discards the expected tickling and warns you of unexpected tickling, hence you feel such a strong reaction when someone tickles you.
