The Attitude of Gratitude

Gratitude, the act of recognizing and showing appreciation for a favour, gift or kindness received.

Let's take a look at what the concept of gratitude is with a view to understanding it better.

It is an attitude. If a person fails to see the need of been grateful for receiving a little gift or favour done for him, he is not likely to see the need to be grateful even when he receives greater things. This explains why a number of people who have little are full of gratitude to God and their benefactors even for the little received.
Gratitude is a key to receiving more from the benefactor. It serves as an encouragement for the benefactor. However, never extend a gift to your benefactor before he performs an act for you but wait until after the performance. This is when it is good enough to appreciate him or her: otherwise, it would be something else.

For a person to be thankful, he must also be thoughtful. He thinks well and finds cause to be thankful. He counts his blessings and names them one by one. This reminds me of the story of the cleansed 10 lepers in the Bible, where only one came back out of the ten to express his profound gratitude. And for that, he had something extra than the rest ; as he was fully restored and made whole (Lk. 17:11-17)
On the other hand, to be ungrateful is to take things for granted. Ingratitude makes a person grounded. This is because he is closing the door against further gifts that should have been extended to by his his or her benefactor.
