Ramblings on a Tuesday night

in #life7 years ago

I just read a facebook quote from Julia Cameron which read ‘As we write with specificity, we gain verisimilitude’.

I consider myself reasonably well educated, but I had to look up what that meant! FYI, the definition, of verisimilitude is ‘the appearance of being true or real.’ For those who don’t know her, I find Julia Cameron inspirational. She is the author of ‘The Artist’s Way’; a great book in getting people (back to) writing. But why the complicated words?

It reminds me that in science, many speak of Occam’s Razor. If you google it, you will probably find many complicated quotes: The Oxford English Dictionary states it is ‘The principle (attributed to William of Occam) that in explaining a thing no more assumptions should be made than are necessary. The principle is often invoked to defend reductionism or nominalism.’

Webster’s states it is ‘a scientific and philosophical rule that entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily which is interpreted as requiring that the simplest of competing theories be preferred to the more complex or that explanations of unknown phenomena be sought first in terms of known quantities.’ https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Occam's%20razor

In real language, that all translates as ‘Keep it Simple’. I have always found it amusing that just saying ‘Leep it Simple’ is made so complicated.

Not sure what prompted this way of thinking. The crazy market, perhaps. Life. Who knows?

Hang in there!
