Según la tradición popular, el gentilicio “chicharrero” con el que se denomina a los habitantes de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, se remonta al siglo XVI y tiene su raíz en los orígenes de la ciudad, cuando esta tan solo era un poblado costero y la actividad productiva más importante entonces era pesca. El Chicharro, un popular pez de las aguas tinerfeñas, constituía la captura más importante de los pescadores Santacruceros. De ahí que se identificase a los habitantes de Santa Cruz como “chicharreros”
