A Flood ravaged area, a Hole in the wall and a Slipper from the Government.

The last 2 months was one of heavy down pour which resulted in the worst rainy season this community has ever experienced since it came into existence.

The reason for the flooding was not unconnected with the foolishness and greed of the developers who not content with their portions of land, decided it was best they build on the allocated spaces for drainage and some even built on roads.

You see, we are always talking about the government not doing anything, but we forget that the people too are the government. The people create bad models that allows the government cheat them. Don't agree? Read the story below.

Flood Ravaged Area.

Thing is, I live in this neighborhood and although my compound wasn't completely taken over, we still needed to create an entry and exit point.
For weeks, we had to walk in the flood to get into our homes and for those whose foundations weren't as high as mine, they packed out of the neighborhood not before their properties has been destroyed.
As you can see from the pics above, residents had to develop foot bridges to be able to reach their homes.

One of the things that troubles me is that, this particular neighborhood is considered high class and a 2 bedroom flat goes for N450,000.00, that is over $1000USD per annum and yet they had no drainage system. The drainage that looked like one was just poorly done and lacks maintenance.
We needed to get into our homes while waiting to get help from the government and we got...

A Hole in the wall.

Like I mentioned earlier, we didn't get pushed out of our home by the floods, the street was just what was not okay to use, so we devised a way to get in and out.
The hole in the wall is classic. We were lucky that there is an undeveloped land and after some negotiations, we found a pathway into our homes.

The residents and landlords held series of meeting and soon enough, the Government heard their plea and promised to send in relief materials to aid those who have been displaced from their homes.

Two weeks after the government promised to do something, they did. They brought "Mattresses, trailer loads of cement which amounted to over 500 bags, over 50 bags of rice, Rain boots, Umbrellas, Slippers and some monies."
The news was a welcome development for the community as many who were displaced saw a chance to get back into their homes.

Time to share the loot.

The relief materials were handed to a committee as set up by the government and they decided how to share the relief material and the sharing came with complaints and grumblings. That as usual is the way it is with our leaders who are sent to protect the welfare of the community.

A Slipper from the Government.

It was a rainy day when I heard a knock on my door and on opening it, it was the landlord's wife holding a nylon bag. After exchanging pleasantries, she handed me the bag saying it is what the government brought as a relief.

On opening the nylon, it was a slipper valued at N100.00, about 30cents. What tha fuck!

I will not want to bore you with my french and how disappointed I was about the relief the government sent that some persons cornered for themselves as the case has always been with Nigerians.
By the next day, I heard so many people were protesting what they got which wasn't what they expected. Some petitioned the government asking that they ask the committee to account for the materials sent.

You know the answer to that or you should by now... We are still waiting and I am sure we will wait for a very long time.

Who here is the evil man? The government or the committee setup to administer the relief materials?
