American Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua)

The American Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) is a most beautiful and useful tree. The fruit of the tree, commonly referred to as seed pods, or gumballs, have been cussed by many who know not of their benefits. Sweetgum seed pods contain an anti-viral property, which is very effective in combating the flu.

The green seed pods contain two types of developing seeds, tiny little white seeds and larger brown “winged” seeds. It is in the green pods and the developing winged seeds where shikimic acid is found. Shikimic acid is used to make Tamiflu. When looking at a Sweetgum seed pod and comparing it to the shape of a flu virus, their appearances are very similar.

The shikimic acid can be extracted in one’s kitchen. The two procedures in which you can make at home are the tincture and the salve. Although it takes a while, it is well worth the effort.
