Secret to a happy work life

A lot about our working lives can be bad - the sort of bad that's simply out of control. Especially if we have no control over our working lives in the first place.

But, in the right working environment - a place that's not toxic - there are things we can do to improve our workplace.

The easiest and simplest way to make our working lives not just tolerable but enjoyable is to be generous with our compliments in the workplace. Think about your colleagues (remember, this is not a toxic workplace we're talking about here, so at worst you should only not really get along with people). Think about their good points, their skills, their abilities, their personality. Make a point in discussions with them, and even in broader meetings to mention peoples good points - in front of them, and in front of others. Especially the boss. Eventually, you will find that these people start loosening up and being more positive, not just about themselves, and the workplace, but about you too.

The second thing to remember is - don't expect, and don't claim credit for the slow transitions which will happen. Just keep doing what you do: spreading positive messages about your team to your team.

I set out on this mission in my own workplace about three or four years ago. Today, my workplace is awesome. How awesome?

Well, we had a planning session today and everyone in the team was asked to write something anonymous about someone else in the team. We then read the summary aloud and we had to guess who was the subject of each note.

And do you know what? It's really really nice hearing people discuss which set of compliments match which team member. Really nice.

I recommend that you try it.

May all beings be happy.

The book "The One Minute Manager" by Kenneth Blanchard explains very well this concept. There is a part about "one minute praisings" which suggest you to give short positive feedbacks to coworkers when you see them doing good things.

Haha - thanks! I actually remember reading that book years (and years) ago. Can't remember what's in it - but maybe I absorbed it somehow after all 🙂

Positive thinking and positive work is excellent

Most excellent indeed!

Sounds like much nicer "office politics" than the kind I usually hear about :D
