Preparing for Halloween - the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain celebrating the Celtic New Year and the Day of the Dead

Since my daughter was little, we have joined our neighbours in celebrating Halloween. I know some may think that this is just cheap gimmick to sell lots of chocolate and lollies, and I used to think the same.

Now I know that this cheap gimmick to sell lots of chocolate and lollies is based on the Celtic tradition of Samhain - a day which celebrates both the Celtic New Year and the Day of the Dead (see http://www.albany.edu/~dp1252/isp523/halloween.html)

I think I was convinced by the call of my Celtic ancestors. Their deaths shall not be in vain. We shall buy chocolate and lollies by the bucket to give to kids as they knock on our door by way of remembering.

In fact the more I have thought about it, the more I do like Halloween. This is still a pretty unconventional position to hold in Australian culture, where Halloween is still seen as a weird child of American pop culture mixed with a good dose of unrestrained commercialism.

But no. I like the roots of Halloween, as an acknowledgement of mortality - that we as humans may think we are gods, especially now when medicine and science can beat death, but ultimately we die and return to the elements of which we are glued together.

The glue of life comes unstuck and our bodies become nothing.

I think it's useful to ground ourselves once a year in this cold and sobering reality, and eat lots of chocolate.
