Death is a word that gets a lot of people afraid; it is that which the rich, poor, educated and mighty must experience in the cause of their existence in life. It is hard to see anyone who hasn’t lost someone close to them; we all have that memory. Death however, should not be feared but we must be careful on what we do so we don’t get to die carelessly with regret. It is bad, and an anomaly to leave the world without making an impact. Touch lives, help the poor, create value, invest time on people and you’ll sure have a happy ending. But all these must be in relation with the God factor being the center of it all.

I am going to explain biochemically what happens when we die. Even though you’re not science inclined, you will understand this. I have made it as simple as ever. Now let’s get started. Have you ever imagined the various processes that take place when you stop breathing? If you have, then this piece should be of interest to you.

When a doctor declares a person DEAD, that doesn’t mean that every cell in the body is dead as well, I know that is shocking to hear, but it is true as that. As the heart stops pumping oxygenated blood, all muscles relax, this result in the shutting down of every single organ that intentionally and dependently relies on oxygen.

But, some cells still live comfortably in your body, some bacteria in our intestines, skin and elsewhere continue to grow, live and survive. The activities of these microorganisms living in our system contribute to the variety of things that happen to the human body thereafter.

EVENTS THAT HAPPEN AFTER DEATH:

LIVOR MORTIS: This is also known as hypostatis. If you are careful and very observant, you’ll notice that skin discoloration would normally happen after death. Livor mortis is the discoloration of the skin and its parts. Remember the heart has stopped pumping blood and can no longer circulate blood, this now causes blood to accumulate in a particular place without flowing out. We call it ‘POOLING OF BLOOD’ , The area where the blood settles or pools turns to dark blue or purple color which is termed LIVIDITY.

Let’s take for example, if someone DEAD is hung on something, lividity will show at the feet and fingertips. This is very simple to grasp, but sometimes certain substances can make the color of the skin become different. These are substances they use in treating dead bodies--- carbon monoxide could change the coloration.

ALGOR MORTIS: This simply means COLDNESS OF DEATH. It is the change in body temperature until an ambient temperature is reached, by an ambient----we mean the particular temperature of the immediate environment. It begins at about 30 minutes after death. It is an adaptational mechanism of a dead body, if a body was initially hot before death and the immediate environment is cold, there would be a steady decline until it matches it.
Why does this happen? Remember that homeostasis is a way of regulating body temperature and internal temperature, but due to the fact that molecules and mediators of this regulation are dead or inactive, the body then humbles itself and is being regulated by external factors. It is as simple as that

RIGOR MORTIS: This is the high point of the whole process. Rigor mortis simply means ‘STIFFNESS OF DEATH’, the muscles of the body will begin to contract in an irreversible manner. There’s usually a flood of calcium that makes muscles stay tensed and rigid. Calcium is an important mediator in muscle contraction, it facilitates movement of muscles by setting off an energy consuming chain reaction that causes myofilaments to change shape and shorten, this shortening leads to muscle contraction. So when there is a flood of calcium during death, muscle stiffness, sluggishness sets in. it is like paralysis, the place becomes rigid and stiff to move.

DECOMPOSITION: Decomposition sets in immediately, no circulation of blood, carbondioxide builds up and pH starts to rise and rise. Remember, I said earlier that some cells do not die after death. They are the bacteria and microorganisms still living in the body, they begin to spread to every part of the body and increase in number. The process of decomposition sets in and --- they begin to break down tissues, organs and cells in our body, they feed on them and eventually release two compounds known as CADAVERINE AND PUTRESCINE, which are the chief source of the putrid odor seen in dead people

All these and other processes continue to happen until eventually the whole flesh disappears and bones become what are left. It is really terrifying to know that we all will experience this. Well, it is a biochemical process that ensures we become recycled back to earth. Knowledge of this valuable to have at the back of your mind.

Maybe this will teach you how humans are helpless after death, how even the rich and influential undergo same process with the poor. You need to be humble and treat one another right. Help the next person grow and rise. Then I bet you, your death will be celebrated.
