The Growing Trend of Micro-Homes

in #life8 years ago (edited)

Not long ago, I came across some articles and videos that taught me about the tiny living trend that is going on around the world at the moment. It's a trend that has many people choosing to live in homes that are less than 500 square feet, most often it's less than even 200 square feet. From Tokyo to San Francisco, there are tiny apartments and condos popping-up all across the globe.

Some have suggested that this will be the housing option for the future, but not everyone is the same and there will always be varying tastes and likely many people in the market who wouldn't be satisfied with a 500 square foot residence. So it's unlikely that there will only be one housing option for the future but for densely populated areas, the tiny living apartments are turning out to be a very lucrative and comfortable living option for many.

The tiny apartments cater to the growing trend of people who are looking to live a simple and more of a minimalist lifestyle. These apartments are unique in design, offer more affordability, and more ecological sustainability. From tiny homes to tiny apartments, many people are looking to get more for less in a number of ways.

New York City got its first apartment building that was made-up entirely of micro apartments, Carmel Place, and it's located at 335 East 27 in New York. It has apartments that are renting for over $2,500, for less than 400 sq. feet.

There are many people who have documented their adventures with their tiny micro living in their unique apartments on Youtube, and there are a wide range of property types out there for those who are interested in living in a smaller space. Many have said that the micro-apartment trend is only going to get bigger and continue to grow.

I'm temporarily living with my sister in a micro home. They're great for one person, even two, but I can't imagine this place with three. I'll have to post about it soon because it's pretty wacky stuff.

let me know when you do! i'd love to read it!

Interesting stuff, friends of ours purchased several train cars and placed them on train tracks on their property and made them into a home. Each railcar has a specific functionality: bedrooms, formal dining room, family room, theater room, den, kitchen, game room & an atrium car. There is a separate guest railcar on a single track about 75 ft from the rest for privacy. It's a cool setup to say the least, especially the atrium car(upper sides and roof all glass). Shit, now that I think about it, probably wouldn't be considered a micro home.

wow that sounds like quite the project! id love to see photographs of something like that it sounds really cool - thanks for sharing! :)

I would love an apartment that is small but would have community modular rooms that could be moved to each apartment. So if you wanted to have a party you could reserve a party pad and it would move to your apartment or viceversa, and hook up to your apartment.

I was an OTR Trucker for 25 years. I lived in my truck. I had about as much room as a fairly small l walk-in closet...about 8 x 8 x 8...note. cubic footage is more of a realistic appraisal than square footage. I only had about six square feet of floor space. Just enough to stand up and put my pants on. everything else was drawers, cabinets, beds or seats..

Worked just fine. Over a million truckers are doing the same thing right now. Many of them don't have THAT much room. Many run 'team' with two people.

This is cool.

We want to buy some land and build a tiny home, but there are several local ordinances requiring minimum square footage, some 1500 sq. ft., essentially preventing us from saving money on living costs.

We eventually will find a place in the longer term, but in the short term here is another example of non-voluntary lack of freedom.

Stunning little homes!

I think these are fantastic if you are single, I would have gone for one of these before I got married. There will always be some peooe who need 50 rooms and 10 bathrooms. The first thing I think about is those little houses would be so easy to clean lol

This is defintely a trend where space is scare. With ingenuity and creativity one can live comfortably in a micro home.

I LOVE tiny homes!!! <3
