Beauty and Madness
Even beauty has also been defined by the society's standard, from the magazines, TV to the internet, these forms of media display a standard of how men and women should look like these days. If you are a man, you should look like a man, and if you are a woman, you should look like a woman. People, especially the younger generation follow this beauty standard to fit in and in fear of being judged by others. In the end, this physical image we worked so hard to maintain is still about impressing ourselves by impressing others.
I have been mirrorless for years, the only time I get to see my reflection is when I'm traveling or when I go outside to run a few errands. Probably it's just that I don't find it necessary to exert some effort in buying a mirror and putting it in my bathroom, or buying a small one and putting it in my pocket. I don't even have time for this simple task. I just feel like maintaining beauty should be without that much effort, besides, I couldn't care less about what other people think these days. Believe me, it is liberating.
Back in the days, I wasted so much time to dress for work. I spent like more than half an hour in front of the mirror, putting makeup and all these beauty products on my face. I bought all these clothes so people at work wouldn't judge me by saying that I wear the same all the time as if these clothes define me.
My environment is so toxic that my female colleagues seem to have nothing else to talk about but clothes, cosmetics, perfumes, and handbags. I admit that I had talked about these with them at some point but after having traveled, I no longer take interest in connecting with people only through these things. It is just too shallow and superficial. Now after years of not having to go to work, I have been used to not dressing up and putting too much makeup these days. What for? I have set myself free a long time ago which means I no longer care so much about the image to impress other people. The only thing I care about these days is my health. If ever I go back to the corporate world and have to face this type of work environment, I would probably just shuffle 3 clothes in a week and I wouldn't even care, as long as I'm productive and I'm bringing results. Actually, I feel like going back to work now just to do this in-your-face kind of not giving a fuck, it seems like kind of fun.
Let's not even blame the mirror, it is the people who are easily brainwashed and controlled by the media these days. Why do we have to look like those celebrities and models anyway, to feel good about ourselves or to impress other men and women? When I'm traveling, I can see the people in other parts of the world are so brainwashed by the western society's standard of beauty - long legs, super thin, white skin and large eyelashes? But who appear most of the time in the movies and advertisements these days? We can't really blame the ordinary people who want to change themselves especially if the archetype of beauty is being shoved into their throats, and that if they don't follow this standard, there would even be worse type of discrimination - we don't look like you.
There is no exquisite beauty… without some strangeness in the proportion.
― Edgar Allan Poe
I have a lot of more important things to take care these days that I even reduced my selection of clothes. If I am just going to the supermarket, I no longer need to spend a lot of time dressing up and putting a lot of makeup to look beautiful, especially when I will just be objectified on the street, the less attractive the better. It is not that I don't care anymore about looking good, I feel like I aim to just naturally look good. I realized that this can be achieved by being aware of what kind of food I eat, having a balanced diet and quitting bad habits. Besides, let us not forget this old cliché that beauty comes from within, if we are truly content and happy at the moment, then real beauty shines from inside out.
I can feel it when I go out and these girls would stare at my feet without nail polish, the way I dress (which is still the travelers' clothes of the not-giving-a-shit type of outfit) or my hair not too neat. I wouldn't even spend that much time and money on nail polish, not that I judge those who do, but really, I have more important things at this moment than care about what other girls think. It's even funnier as if looking at me from head to toe would make them pretty. Most people here are judgmental, if they see you not following the standard of beauty the environment and culture have shoved into them, you are just mad.
There are no bad pictures; that's just how your face looks sometimes.
― Abraham Lincoln
Let's not forget about the rise of social media that brought a generation of self-obsessed narcissists. Magazines used to be the number 1 form of media to advertise the standard of beauty, but now anyone can be a celebrity since the mass-proliferation of Facebook and Instagram. Beauty is now defined by how many likes your selfies would get, and it has even become deceptive due to different angle and filters that make average-looking people appear attractive. The corporations take advantage of this disturbing side of human beings, that there are now more beauty products and advertisements that cater to the selfie generation. I'm not going to wash my hands here and say that I don't have some selfies, as I treat these as some kind of art that I can insert in my posts. If taking a selfie people can give me millions by liking it, why not? But until then I wouldn't be so obsessed.
I cannot emphasize enough the benefits of achieving a minimalist life. We'll notice that if we stop focusing on artificial ways to look good, to stop spending too much time in front of the mirror and not be so obsessed with our self-image, we will be able to divert our attention to more important things in life. True freedom requires some courage, and achieving it by not letting ourselves be defined and controlled by the society's standards might disappoint other people, make us feel left out or might even hurt us in the process, but in the end, it's all worth it.
When I opened my feed and saw the title 'Beauty and Madness', I knew before I read further that you had written it XD
I love what you are saying here, and until I moved into this trailer, I also hadn't had a mirror in years. It actually bothers me to see myself in the mirror now - because it's in the bathroom, and across from the toilet =p Not the most flattering view in a full length mirror to suddenly be exposed to after years without one!
All my clothes are work clothes, and I don't care. Well, I actually have one t-shirt I strive not to get paint on or rip, cuz it's my kid's band, and THAT has meaning to me. Mostly what I want from clothes is lots of pockets to hold my stuff, tough fabric to wear slowly and protect me, and... well, that's about it LOL
Those looks you get are envy. Other women strive and primp to be attractive, but you have self confidence, which is the most attractive quality a person can have, and they are jealous of you, because their self esteem is based on paint, not themselves.
Sexeh!
It can't be the worst lol.
That's true what you say about other women, all I can do is to understand that perhaps it is not them...but let's wait a couple of years more and see what has changed in their mentality.
@diabolika Why are you downvoting and hiding the comments from @paps? He is disagreeing with the ideas you expressed in your post, but doing so in a respectful manner and providing his reasoning as to why he thinks that way.
Maybe the following article recently published by @suesa could be of interest for you:

@irime, I don't need unsolicited advice or links from you, your opinion does not matter because I don't know you and you don't know me. This is my post and I can upvote or downvote, whatever I do here should not affect your life.
Upvote means you understand, you agree, you want to feed me or you simply like what I write lol. Let's be real.
It also means not promoting your beliefs, demanding me to believe, begging to check post, negativity and defending your friends on my posts. You have your own feed for that, no?
Flagged - unrelated to my post.
Otherwise, don't upvote. 😊
Honestly, I am quite surprised by your stance in this, since it directly contradicts the open-mindness that I seemed to perceived in some of your writings and your "not caring about what other people think" attitude that you seem so proud of and often bring up in your posts (including this one, so you don't say that this comment is "irrelevant" to the post).
You sound unnecessarily resentful, but OK, from now on I will leave you alone in your echo chamber. Ciao.
Awww sorry, I failed your expectations. Let go of your illusions about other people. They will not always be the way you want. You have a lot to learn girl. Again, you are commenting after a long time just to defend your friend? Wow.
There is no such thing as open-mindedness, everyone has dislikes, preferences, likes, otherwise there will be peace on earth by now.
BTW self-upvote on your own comment is cheap - helping minnows and upvoting other comments are better, so stop washing your hands.
I will flag this because it is unrelated to my post. It is irrelevant because my post is about beauty and madness, not about attacking someone you don't know or trolling other posts.
Bye!
Media programme are "programmed" always affect our thinking. Nice post!
I love the Abe Lincoln quote! lol
Haha. 😊
The issue of beauty has been hijacked by advertising, in the mass media age.
Superficial, physical beauty, exists for a reason.
Its a genetically hardwired instinct of reproduction, not a societal imposition.
The problem has only arisen with the mass media age, and the amount of bias placed on physical beauty.
Beauty has always had it's place in society, but before mass media, it just didn't play as an important a role.
As big a role.
I (optimistically) think, that the very process we are going through at the moment, (the narcissism of 'the selfie' etc.) will implode on itself.
I don't think it will take too long, either.
Social media is such a new phenomenon, we are still at the stage of 'children with a new toy.'
And like children with a new toy, will soon get bored of non fulfilling activities.
Then the fashion and beauty industries - will feel the backlash of the monster they have created over the years, as people turn away from it.
A disregard of the media machine narrative.
And once that begins, that will be the start of a shift in the emphasis we put on beauty.
Great perspective you have always.
Let's see what will happen in the future as we become adults with this toy we have 'social media'.
I have ignored the media machine now, I kind of like know what I want and what I don't want these days - including the type of people.
Thank you.
I am the same- media shmedia.
'the type of people' - the fewer people , the better, for me personally.
(I'm slowly becoming a hermit lol)
It is a plastic world today. Everyone wants to look the same. And goes through the same beauty machine. There is no uniqueness. One "beautiful" woman looks and behaves like another. One cool dude is like all other cool dudes :D ... And this is because there is a complete lack of focus on character and personal talents or uniqueness of thought, from where is born true beauty and style. Great post !
We used to believe that we are all unique, but these days, I think it is really hard to find a truly unique person.
You bet. All are clones of the standardized Barbie Doll version . No one is original. No originality in thoughts or looks . It is all a mass factory production. 😊
I like how you think. 😊
This is the best compliment I have ever received 😊🍷🍷. Thank you .💐 I am happy that you like the way I think. I am glad that my thoughts resonate with you. 😊
It's so relieving to see more people who realize all this. I was the only one I knew back when I was in my working bubble five years ago. Now I see there are many other sane people around the world and in every city.
I also don't really look in a mirror, except for fun every once in a while to remind myself that I have an identity X-D
Yeah, years ago I thought I was the only one who realized this too. I guess we are spread out all over the world. It would be nice to unite.
You are absolutely right.
So many people suffer from this unnatural beauty standards promoted in social media.
I recently saw a photo shoot of a model, where the guy didn't only modify her "shape" in photoshop, but even removed the "imperfection" like a blemish from her leg.
I was like: seriously???
And the young teens are bombarded with hundreds of pictures like that.
Health is the most important thing. And it's funny that when you start accepting your natural beauty, you become healthier (especially mentally) and the people see your beauty for what it is.
But it takes courage indeed.
Thanks for this great read!
Oh yes, I even forgot to mention the magic photoshop is doing, giving us the illusion of a perfect body image.
Natural beauty is definitely healthy! Thanks.
Well, yes, you are beautiful and mad:D
Awwww, no need to say that. 😊
Media plays a key role in improvising our lives and brainwash them. Great post. Good you gave up on cosmetics and make up, take care of your health.
Thank you!
