I think daylight saving made more sense when societies were less automated... we really don't do as much thee days that's daylight sensitive and isn't done by automation. I know many of the underlying reasons have economic backgrounds... but do we really need excuses to "consume more?" Not from where I am sitting...

Yes that's true.
But on the other hand, I think in many European countries with moderate climate (like denmark as well) we don't get the sun that often, so it's nice to have an extra hour of sunlight.
It might not matter as much in areas where it's sunny all the time anyway, like california or spain.
