More Time? You'll NEVER Have "More Time" Than You Do Right Now!

in #life7 years ago

Sitting here with my daily to-do list, contemplating what I hope to accomplish today. Doesn't look good...

How often do you consider something you want to do... then think again and say to yourself "You know, I'll get around to that when I have more time!"

A peaceful gazebo for when I have more time!

Maybe we want to take up painting, or Judo, or clean the house from head to toe and throw away everything we no longer need. Maybe we want to start working out, or write a book (that's one of mine!) or become more sustainable by having our own vegetable garden.

Seems like "waiting for more time" is something we almost ALL do. In many cases, we'll revisit our pet ideas later... and once again decide that we need to put them off till we have "more" time.

And yet?

"More time" never seems to come along. But we do have really good intentions. I know I do!

We think we'll have "more time" when we get done with university. Or when we get married. Or when our kids are no longer toddlers. Or when the new job comes through. Or when our kids leave home. Or when we retire.

After all these 30+ years of studying human behavior and how we approach life, I have concluded that we will NEVER have more time than we have, right now!

Maybe that doesn't sound very encouraging... and maybe you don't even agree with me. But it does tend to hold true... based on simple observation of myself and others.

Why?

In part, I believe that no matter where we are in life, there is never a shortage of things clamoring for our attention. So, no matter where we may find ourselves, we never have "more time." We have just the amount of time we have.

So what about "taking up painting?" Does that mean we'll never get to take up painting?

It's not about TIME, it's about PRIORITIES!

We have to stop relying on the "more time" excuse, and simply prioritize our time, as it is.

We have to create the illusion of "more time" by removing something else from our lives... and odds are we can find some things that really aren't of much use to us, anyway. In many cases "more" time can be found by examining old habits and routines... often there are things we are doing because "we've always done them" but they actually aren't useful or relevant, anymore.

There is your time to take up painting!

So next time you're thinking you'll "wait till you have more time," STOP! Instead, think about how you can make more time, right now!

Case in point: Whereas I was fairly excited about finding Steemit and its potential as a place were I could take up "general" blogging again there was a little voice inside me going "Great, and when exactly will you have TIME for that? Better wait until _______!"

No, not really. So even though I had "no time," I am here writing because I chose to forego something else... mostly relating to time wasting on Facebook and a couple of niche blogs it was time to accept were going nowhere.

Odds are you'll never have more time to get around to writing that book... but you will have the choice to take 30 minutes of the time you spend playing Angry Birds every day and put it into writing.

Do you put off things in the belief you will do them when you have "more time?" Do you often discover that the alleged "more time" doesn't tend to come along? Do you make time for the new things you really want to start? Are you good at prioritizing your time for your own "highest and best use?"
