It requires a lot of courage to do something like that. I too am horrible at public performances but this is skill that you can train. Having worked as a trainer I actually had to. But I can't imagine doing what you did. It was such a great idea to go and grab your papers and show them all that you can do it :) And it's also a great story to tell :)
