Productive Sick Days: A WalkthroughsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #life8 years ago (edited)

I woke up at 6am. Itchy throat. Pounding headache. Another sinus infection.

I’m standing around in my excessively comfortable MeUndies lounge pants and a stupor that’s repeatedly interrupted by waves of pain.

I must resist the urge to lay around sick all day. I must get stuff done.

Two Advil. A Neti-Pot rinse. A long hot shower.

A short ritual that get’s me feeling good enough to get out of the house. Fresh air would help, but it’s LA, so I’ll never find any.

Down the street there’s an amazing coffee place called Go get em Tiger, which has no references to Mary Jane Watson, despite being a direct reference to Mary Jane Watson. The coffee is perfect, the soft scrambled eggs are fantastic. I take a slow walk to the shop, enjoying the chilly LA morning.

On my kindle, I have a post-apocalyptic novel called Station Eleven*. *I try reading, but have trouble concentrating. I buy the whispersync version for my kindle, and now narrator speaks the words while I read. This keeps me focused. Technology wins and 75 pages later, full of coffee and eggs, I make my way home.

By now, the Advil is in full effect, and I know the at least one painless hour is coming. There were a few articles for work that need some editing, and I blast through them with a clear head.

By the time I’m done, the pulsing returns.

I try to levitate a chair, checking to make sure it was a headache and not emerging mutant powers, and of course, I’m disappointed again.

Nap. Wake up. Shower. Neti-Pot. And back to the day.

I need something to keep my mind off the headache, so I practice some fingerpicking; I’m learning to play a little Spanish guitar. After thirty minutes of practice, and a coworker calls, and we have a short discussion about upcoming projects and set up a meeting for later on this week.

My head hurts so bad that I no longer want to have my eyes open. So I lie down and listen to a podcast. I get through two episodes of Philosophize This!

Both episodes are on Nietzsche and both are awesome!

It’s late in the day, and I have to get to the gym if I want to defeat this headache.

I hop in the car and drive to Nerdstrong. They have a pretty serious workout going on - it’s called The Trinity, and it’s based on the most important trinity in history: Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman.

I get home completely exhausted, but the day's not over, so I shower and meet my girlfriend for dinner. It’s lovely, but I’m tired, and it's obvious so she sends me home to get some rest - instead, I write this blog post.

Looking back, here’s what I managed to accomplish:

  • 75 Pages Read.
  • 3 Articles Edited for Work
  • Mutant Powers Tested
  • Guitar Practice
  • Meetings Set Up
  • Philosophy Knowledge Gained
  • Heavy Workout
  • Steemit Blog Post

All in all, it was a pretty productive day.

Thanks for reading.

Excited to discover a new philosophy podcast via this post! I'm currently listening to the Sam Harris Podcast and just started with Very Bad Wizards. If you have any other good recommendations please let me know.

Hardcore History and Revolutions if you like history. Myths and Legends is also good. I try to keep a small number of podcasts on my list -- listen through all of the episodes taking notes, and then pick up another one.

I got up, felt grumpy.
Drove my wife to the wrong pool.
Nearly got run off the road in the pouring rain.
Got home and stared at my screen.
Read a bunch of steemit posts.
Picked my wife up from the right pool.
Had a nap.
Fixed bugs.
More steemit.
Buggered up my daily photo post.
Hell, and I'm not even sick!
Dude, even on a bad day you get through more than me ;-)

Thanks for spending some time checking out my post. Appreciate it.
