Growing up in the 1980s, there wasn't much in the way of penny candy even then. In fact, the only thing that cost a penny that I remember was something called Fortune Gum. It was a stick of gum with a fortune in the wrapper. My local grocery store and a barrel-like container full of it...1 cent each.
Thanks for sharing that. I was a kid in the 60's. I did notice not all stores did penny candy. Thank you @darth-azrael!
