A Syllogism of Life, Love and Suffering

Using logic to argue that loving life is not an option!

A Syllogism of Life, Love and Suffering

Why is it useful to combine and celebrate knowledge derived from many different times and cultures? This little syllogism I came up with years ago provides meaningful insight into the human condition. It takes a number of well known phrases and arranges them as a syllogism, a form of logical argumentation first defined by Aristotle (4th c. B.C.) At the time I wrote it in a dozen old plastic film canisters and tossed them in various rivers while hiking through Europe to be found by a lucky heart. Perhaps it can bring a smile to your face today!

"Life is suffering."
-
"Love is suffering."

Therefore: "Life is love."

Quote attribution is as follows: "Life is suffering." - Siddhartha Gautama aka Buddha (ca. 6th c. B.C., India), "Love is suffering." -Andreas Capellanus (ca. 12th c., France), "Life is love."-Leo Buscaglia (20th c., USA).

I have often thought of this in the moments when life has been the most difficult to bear and when suffering has temporarily won the upper hand. It leads quickly to the idea that the more deeply we suffer, the more deeply we can love. For if we did not have the lows to go with the highs, we could not fully appreciate the positive things in life. This in itself is light in the darkness, a hope when it is most needed.

I hope you take this little syllogism with you out into the world and spread it in the hearts of those you meet. For love really is the answer.

omnia vincit amor!

Yep.. life is full of suffering..

Sadly true, but without it we wouldn't have anything to compare love and happiness to and thus recognize their true worth. Thanks for the comment!
